Hi All! Just had to share some of the results of our past week of fishing up in the Great Land!

Some super fishing has been had on both the saltwater as well as on my boat on the Kasilof ... we've been averaging 15-20 hookups a day on the river kings and the king and halibut bite has been pretty good in the salt as well ...

Russell and Capt. Bill (right) after a successful day on the salt:

You're not gonna find any of these in Florida!

Flower Power pays off nicely on the Kasilof!

And they even suckered me into wearing the ceremonial headress!

Here's a chromer headed back into the dirty waters of the Kasilof...

Under sunnier skies, here's another!

And what happens to a boat trailer tire when a porcupine gets in the way ... ouch!

A PS ... airfares are on sale again!! http://dps1.travelocity.com/cannonball.c...der&LANG=EN

Fishgal and I got to play the past two days ... look for some more posts on what we found when we headed separate directions!

Looks like you guys are doing well on the Kasilof. I am also in Soldotna for the summer. I have been doing very well on the Anchor and I also caught a few down in homer. I fished the Kasilof memorial day weekend a couple of times from the bank and caught 6 in three trips including a nate that measured at 46". (no girth I didn't take it out of the water). There was supposedly a recent reg change on the kasilof announced on the radio. Do you know what it was I missed it? Maybe I'll see ya on the river some day.

I do that fancy purple gloves all the time handling fish as much as I do and dealing with a lot more line cuts and tooth scrapes ... we're also fishing eggs part of the time, so it gives my hands a break so I can still hang onto a golf club when I get the chance smile

No emergency regs announced WRO, probably just heard a reminder of the new regs for this season ... double checked wih the state page on that one.

You can always check: http://www.sf.adfg.state.ak.us/statewide/EONR/index.cfm?region=Region%202%2DSouthcentral

Just about time to get back to work ...

Bob,

I thought there was a voluntary release of all Halibut over 150lbs in Alaska per the request of the ADFW. If memory serves me, the fish over 150 are the brooding females and this release is to protect the future viability of the fishery for obvious reasons. I read about this in Alaska magazine. If so, is the word not out up there or are some folks not particularly concerned.

PD ... No "request" per the ADF&G that I've seen.

Releasing large halibut is a good idea ... had mine been more than a few punds larger that I have pictured in the other thread, I would have kicked mine back. In actuality, 100 lbs. is gnerally considered the cut-off point for the female breeders.

Releasing large halibut has become fairly commonplace in SE Alaska waters, but is actually quite rare in Sothcentral waters. Clients are usually brought up to speed on trheir life cycles while fishing ... but in a fishery that is pretty much 99% meat fishing, bigger the better for most.

It's funny looking at the general attitudes in this area. Most have little trouble releasing large trout and nearly all steelhead are mandated C&R ... but halibut die period, and it's almost that time of year where any AK resdient can come down to the Kasilof mouth and place set gillnets for reds and kings. A few weeks later, they'll use giant dipnets on both Kenai and Kasilof Rivers from both shore and boats to scoop up fish.

It's a strange place smile

Personally, I'd love to see an official slot limit in place ... but until that day, and in our proximity to Anchorage, I don't think you'll see many released.
