Hey 4S,
Don't want to start another battle with you, but maybe there is a "generation gap" going on here!
Do you known what people in there early 50's use that sign for? Not knocking you this time, but when I saw it, I thought exactly what driftboater probably had thought! Maybe younger people used it to mean something else! I know what we used it for, and it sure wasn't any kind of "love" or victory gestures.
No attacks intended!

No Blueticks here,, Redbones or Black and Tans ![laugh laugh](/forum/images/graemlins/default_dark/laugh.gif) and I like the conniber style trap.. Its usually an instant kill Does ACDC count? I dont know any of that new stuff! ======================== The Thumb in the air stands for a "I" The thumb and and forefinger together represent the letter "L" The forefinger and the pinky are supposed to be a "U" which makes a "I Love You" When I drop my boy off to daycare we exchange this sign to eachother.. Pretty simple huh!

One to many fingers for hang loose...
The truth is, it's Beavis and Butthead's favorite hand sign.

Ok....meaningless was definitely the wrong pharase in that context.
My point was a gesture means what you want it to mean. In my case it means...
Rock On!!
I believe the gesture above is intended to represent a 'W'.
BTW...I updated my sig to reflect more clearly its sentiment.

Hey driftboater,
It appears that this symbol may mean many different things to many different generations!
When we were kids, the 2 fingers straight up ment that you were giving the Bull $hit sign (i.e. you are full of it) to some one! And it really didn't matter where your thumb was pointing!
Now, you know how wars are started by the misunderstanding of body language. I can remember watching CNN and FOX during the Iraq war, and they where telling everyone that the "thumbs up" signs were like our middle finger sign ( it was an insult not a welcome gesture). Then the next week, they were saying that we were being "welcomed" because they were giving our troops the thumps up sign.
So what does it really mean to each generation, and how in the world does it change from one generation to the next?

That is truly amazing how the market place can change things to make a profit! But I will bet you this was all done in the last 15-20 years.
Ps, if you are still droping off your kids at school, that sounds about right.

Driftboater is absolutely correct. It comes from the American Sign Language (ASL) and is a combination of I, L, & Y (I Love You). You can learn more about it here: American Sign Language Dictionary
