I have seen so many Elk and Deer dragging floppy legs because of those same ethical hunters equally "trained and highly skilled". I for one despise PETA and the BS they spew, but do not believe any ethical sportsman would ever intentionally shoot at an animal knowing that the snapshot will more than likely hit an area that only causes suffering or an agonizing death. I do not believe (I hope) that anyone on this board would enjoy ANY animal to suffer....

I shoot at ducks flying full out,, whats the difference?

I shoot and kill many coyotes running full out, I also shoot and miss them.

I was referring to a photo, so please don't jump to conclusions. My digital camera has a slow aquisition time, so I couldn't get the yote in frame.

If I had been about 20 yards closer (actual range of 25 yards), I might have thought about popping of a shot or two with my pistol considering that I had a good sand berm backstop. 45 yards was just a bit too far.

I have had over 100 hours of firearms instruction. How many hours have had? I carried a sidearm for a job for two years. I have taken a number of grouse, and three coyotes to date with my primary carry pistol, an HK USP compact in .40 S&W. I know where it shoots, I know how to use it, and I know my own limitations.

I am also one of the nicest guys you will ever meet, so I will forgive you in advance for jumping to your conclusion.

I am sure you are a nice guy Dogfish. I was not so much making the statement about you, as much as I was concerning the statement made about someone being ethical simply due to their expertise with a firearm. I have known a few people that could pop a quarter in the air with a pistol, but they could shoot an animal in the hindquarters and then laugh when it was squealing and dragging itself around.
I take pride in the fact that I have never experienced an animal suffering due to a poorly placed (or impossible running) shot. But then again, I have not killed near as many animals as many people I have known.

Taking animals in a fair-chase scenario is an honorable action IMHO, taking animals for nothing more than bragging rights, and with little regard for the animals wellbeing, is somehthing that none of us should be guilty of.......... BTW, I would enjoy meeting you someday Dogfish. Anyone that would fish for Lings in a Kayak is okay in my book!

Oh, and one thng I forgot to mention......

I qualified sharpshooter in the military and experienced as a sniper, so I do know how to shoot. My one shot, one kill attitude also includes game I am after, with the exception of fowl. In that regard I must confess I will empty the shotgun if they dont fall.......

I know a couple of guys who can shoot running game consistently. Believe it or not, there are some fabulous shots out there.

But, you won't find me shooting at running game with a rifle or hand gun. I'm simply not good enough.

I'll trust Andy to decide what is a good shot and what isn't. He knows the difference.

I remember showing a buddy of mine a beaver pond.We were out in my polywog and for some reason I had my 22,an old single shot.He started braging about what a great shot he was and all the competitions he had one in Idaho.I was skeptical and he could tell.

Out of the blue he grabbed the rifle popped the safety and nailed a crow in flight at a good distance.

Just ask driftboater, glowball and others.
Animal suffering for their entertainment is the cost of doing business.
The lower-percentage shots are just too tempting for the 'experts'.
Better to wing one and have them suffer than to not take the shot at all.

I've seen game missed and wounded when they're standing still, so it all depends on the shooter! Feel free to pass them up, I'll kill 'em later. I've stacked up a few tons of big game (and small too), so don't judge me (or anyone for that fact) until they've made a mistake.

You know, looking up a number of posts by some of these "armchair ethics scholars" has been enlightening.

One guy has posted almost nothing constructive while lying about the not-so-hidden agenda of his favorite animal rights groups.

Another fellow has posted nothing but short snippy comments on other people's posts, and on the few original posts that he comes up with, he only asks questions. Be original, I dare you.

It would be nice if you would make an original post, share something with the board, help us learn how to do something better.

I have tried my best to remain civil, and I have shared a number of outdoor experiences that I have had on this board. Sure, I made a few erors (Hmmm.... Cowlitz gravel pit boat launch , eggs for sale ), everybody does, but judging from the comments in the replies to a number of my original posts, folks seem to enjoy most of them.

I challenge you to come up with something entertaining and enlightening where the readers sit back and say "Wow, that was pretty cool. Someday, I want to try that!"

Finally, to those who think my posts are just bragging, they're not, because "it ain't braggin' if you can do it." (Dizzy Dean)

JacobF made a great post on giant sturgeon, and the photos make me want to try it. That should be your goal when you sit down to write. Contribute something, please.
