I've been running salmon scenters on my downriggers the last couple weeks and have noticed a dramatic increase in hookups. I don't know if this is attributable to more kings showing up or if these things really work. I would like to hear if others are having the same success with this new item.

What kind of scenters are you using?

I was looking at some new cannonballs that have scent packs, thought they might be effective.

C&B,
I was hoping to show you a picture, but this is what I got:
scenter
It looked like a piece of pipe with very narrow slots cut into it w/ a screw-on cap.

I also would like to hear any and all testimonials.

Mikvin,
Thanks for the report. I bought one from Salmon University plus made a couple more on my own. I haven't used them yet, but will report findings once I do.

Ok, a small piece of pipe with slats or holes cut in it, screw on cap, etc.

Is this connected to your downrigger planer or ball or actually at the flasher?

It attaches at the ball or cable. And of course it is recommended that the user purchase the secret scent granules from Salmon U. babble

The one I'm using I bought from salmon university and it came with scent. They look easy to make. I'm not sure what their scent is but they are little tablets you pack into the cylinder tube. I have only used them the last two times out. One day I hit 4 kings the next 5 kings. I need to fish them for a few weeks to make sure I didn't just have two good days.

I have been using a similar idea for a couple of years and it has been successful at times. I am gonna try and make some up similar to those you have!

I am pretty certain the Scents SU sells is either the same food material fed to smolts in the hatcheries, or something similar to that. It stokes a little nostalgia in the fish, memories of the olden days, then they BITE!

Maybe John or any of the other SU guys could enlighten us.

When Tom Nelson spoke at the SnoKing PSA meeting, he did not claim that the scenter was a miracle fish getter. He said he thought it would increase your catch rate by about 20%. That is about the same increase that he felt one got using a black box. Supposedly the scent tablets were a "special formulation" that SU developed..... (but you may be right, Sky-Guy)

Interestingly someone in the audience asked if using the scenter was illegal chumming. Tom replied that it definately was chumming, but it is legal to chum for food fish (like salmon), but not game fish.

I made some of these out of plastic pipe, tubing that i got from home depot. but i dont know where or what to put in them. Can someone tell me where to buy this stuff and how they are doing with it?
As far as the scenters went, i just went to Home Depot and asked the guy to show me all of the lawn watering stuff, and picked out some gray plastic pipe with threads. the caps were there too. took them home and drilled some holes in them at an angle, wala don't look bad at all. I also put a stainless steel round hook in one end to attach it to whereever. Have not tried them out but would surely like to give them a try, thinking about Tacome next weekend, taking one of the shorebound neighbors.

Somethingsmells...,

Go to the salmonuniversity.com and they'll have some info there.

I listened to John Keizer talk at the Puyallup Sportsman Show and he said that the pellets are the same food fed to baby chinook. Supposedly puts out a stink trail a hundred yards long. I have some of the chow, but haven't had a chance to try it yet. I also just looked at their site, and it says that they are sold out, but that's where you can get it from. If I remember right, I paid $4 for a gallon size bag.

Good luck
