HOOCHIE...what is it, how do you rig it, what has worked well for you?

Looks like a plastic squid,run your line thru the center hole with the legs towards the hook
slide on a bead to stop it from slideing down on the hook,tie on a hook and go fishing.I've used small chunks of herring or herring fillets
behind them and it worked really well for salmon.

A lot of guys use that setup Bob posted about trolled behind flashers run shallow for ocean coho. So does jig mooching them with an up and down action with your pole.

The real small 3 inch hootchies scented with baitoil and backtrolled behind Brads divers works pretty good up the rivers. Those plug divers give them some good action.

Though they are designed to appear as squid, fish hit them because of the shape and size mimics baitfish. The tenacles actually provided extra action to the lure. To be effective for salmon, they have to be used behind a flasher or dodger for action. They can also be used for jigging, but they are not as effective as normal lead jigs.

As far as what works for me doesn't necessary mean it works for others. Everybody has their own niche when it comes to colors.. especially when fishing for Silvers. For Blackmouth, I only used glow in the dark colors in color combos of plain or green/glow.

They are my favorite lure for migrating kings and silvers. Glow, glow, glow!

Two steps to success.. (1) Match hootchy size to the natural size. If you don't know, it is better to lean on the small side. (2) start off small early in the season and end up large when the returning fish are here.

Most of the herring in PS average 2 years old... this puts them at anywhere from 3-4 inches...

Is the glow/green spot hooch in your pic a glo below from Radiant lures or is it one of the local brands??? That color looks pretty productive.

As for me my top three are Cop Car, Army Truck and Green Spatterback. The key with all 3 is that they include some form of glow in the dark on the hooch. Also notice the glow in the dark beads on DRs setup. I personally like the hook set up in the second pic (doubles). I like to use a wire hook and straighten the hook bend so it is parralell to the shank and also bend the hook tips so they point out instead of in, makes the hook stick a lot easier. Just make sure to resharpen the hooks after you modify them.

Yep, those are Radiant! I like the Aligator, but my favorite is Glo Below. Clover Leaf is the spotted one.

You owe to yourself to get a couple spoons also. Nearly the same cast/cut as a 'Yote, but painted on both sides and a fraction of the cost!

I did a quick check and it appears prices have increased a little in the spoon department. The 4" and 5" spoons were $2.79 and $3.99 respectively not too long ago when I made a major purchase.

I dunno.... maybe John cut me a break since I bought so much. Looking at the invoice right now...
