Jerry closed the coon thread before I could finish this post! This is not saying that killing a coon is right or wrong, It just give you, and the coon an option that you should consider. If Jerry wants to remove this post, it's his call! There are ways to get ride of the raccoons without killing them! I have caught tons of them and didn't have to harm or kill any of them. All you got to do is spend about $20 and a couple hours of time and you can make a trap that will catch those raccoons, possums, skunks, or wild cats. The trap is two foot by two foot square and is three and half feet long. The picture shows you how easy it is and I will be glad to tell you how to make it if you cant figure it out by just looking at the picture. Do yourself and the coons a big favor and make one soon. Once the coon is in the trap all you need to do is put a couple 1 inch dolls rods or ½ pipe through the wire just below the hope of the cage. That way you can carry it to your car or truck without getting bit! If you need more details send me an email and I will send you instructions. This way you win and so does the coon! Take him for a short ride to the nearest rural area and both of you can go back home! Cowlitzfisherman

Cool trap Cowlitz.
Sounds like the coon thread was pretty interesting. Wish I could have enjoyed it. Must have been down on the river fishing.
Shooting them is pretty fun too.

Like I said, I have caught many, many coons and I have not had a "problem". But like any trapped wild animal, you can't leave them in there all day long and expect them to remain clam. You are right about covering them up, and it makes there trip back to the woods a whole lot easer on both you and the animal.
It's just like everything else in life . . . you have to make a choices!
Bad feet vs death isn't really that hard for me to make, just ask old cooney boy!
Most store bought traps are way to small and that is why the animal gets pantic .

Just incase the picture doesn't show it I will post a picture of the top roller so that you can see how it works. It is just a sliding glass door roller that has a channel grove that fits on the door track. I used 2 small springs to hold it in place. I used seven strand wire from the foot trap screen to trap door (critters can't bite it off). On the back, just before the wire drops down into the bottom trip screen, I placed another door roller to guide for the wire down into the cage trip screen. On the front of the door, I used a "gate door latch" see (picture). That’s all there is to making it. It's really simple and it really works great! My neighbor just came over this morning and asked if he could use it to catch a coon that is eating up all of his cat's food. Remember, it's important to build the trap for the size of critters that you want to catch. The trap won't hurt your cat if he decides to go into it so don't worry about that. I have found that when you have cats around and you don't want catch them in it, all you need to do is to use the right "bait". I suggest that you use plums for catching the coons if you have cats running around. Coons love plums and cats won't come near them. Good luck! Cowlitzfisherman

CFM,
I like your design. I couldn't figure out the way to keep it closed, but your gate latch idea is just the ticket. How do you rig the trigger?

Dogfish, Since my neighbor has got my trap right now, I will go over and take a couple more pictures that should show how it works. If you look at the picture, in the bottom of the cage, there is a metal grill about 16X20 inches. The grill is tied to the bottom of the cage with a couple of hog nose clips on the front side. They act as hinges and allow the back of the trap plate to be raised up. The Cable goes from the top of the roller straight down to the trip plate. I hope this will tell it all! Good luck Cowlitzfisherman

Cool! Looks like I got a project coming up. Is that copper water pipe you used for the frame? Lightweight, but built hell for stout if it is. I was worried about the door being too heavy to allow for a smooth trigger release, but the copper waterpipe solves that. I'm thinking of incorporating a UHMW block for the trigger pin to go into, just to make sure of I get a smooth release. I bet you could alter it for a pigeon trap, as well. Just make two different add-on panels with pigeon doors. Thanks for the photos. I'll post a few of my completed project when it is done. Here kitty kitty kitty..............

Yep, that was ¾ copper tubing! It's strong and you can braze or soldering the wire, hinges and latch right to it. It will also catch birds, but usually only the single bird that walks onto the trip plat. I catch lots of rabbits by using apples or lettuce leafs. The trap used to look a lot better, until I loaned it to one of friends. His friend then proceeded to back his truck over it and make it look like a bail of wirer! It took a couple of hours of repair work to get it back into shape again, so that the door would slam shut and lock. It's not the "best looking" trap anymore, but it still works great! I can't wait to see your new improved version! Knowing how "handy Andy" is, I'll bet it will look really great! Cowlitzfisherman

I'm thinking of adding a cupholder.

Andy If I was to make a new one, I would also add a couple carrying handles located in the right places on the cage. Then one guy can move the cage without worrying about getting bit! Rods works, but permanent handles would be much better. Good luck Cowlitzfisherman
