Hey,

I'm heading to Desolation sound near campbell river. I've never been up that far before. I'll be cruising a big sailboat and sportfishing from the dingy. If anyone has any experience up there, I would sure apprecieate any tips or advice on cool things to do, crab spots,etc...

Thanks

On your way to Desolation Sound stop at Stuart Island for some good fishing..stop at Big Bay and ask about the fishing. When cruising into Desolation look for the waterfalls that cascade down from freshwater lakes high above the salt ....anchor your boat close to the base of the falls and swim in for some mussels and oysters on the rocks...huge prawns lurk in the 3-400ft depths. It is an absolutely fablulous area. I made dozens of trips up there in the 80s and early 90s..The closet I've been lately is Campbell River.

We did a trip similar to yours a couple years ago. We didn't fish seriously at all, but hooked a few rockfish. If you get very far into the sound I wouldn't expect much salmon traffic. Good luck walking ashore at low tide without stepping on an oyster, though. smile

You can shower under the waterfall at Teakerne Arm. Pendrell Sound has some of the warmest water in the northern hemisphere if you want to go for a swim.

Don't forget the Tobasco!
