I am new to surf fishing so I need some pointers on what to use for surf perch, rockfish, or any other kind of fish I can catch surf fishing.

I also need some help on catching herring for salmon bait, I have some of those herring jigs and everything but do I use bait? and how should I use the setup?

Any advise on surf fishing would help lots

Thanks In advance, Travis help

No bait on the herring jigs youll just catch poggies and salmon fry like that.

I use to go surf fishing alot at wesport. If you live in the sound dig up clams here gooey duck work the best. I dig them up where its poluted and cut them into 1/2 inch wide 1 inch long strips. If yopu want to use ghost shrimp buy a shrimp gun and go behind the coast gaurd station in westport at low tide use the shrimp gun at the water line over the holes so you get the proper suction its a real money save because you can go through alot of bait especilly if yor using shrimp. I use to camp at twin harbors state park, you can catch fish there but the fish are bigger down by the light house heading towards copalis. If you do some scouting you can find some killer spots by looking for the low spots in the beach at low tide and fishing them at high tide. If its not low tide you can still find some great spots by fishing where the waves come together. I used 4 to 5 ounce claw sinkers and a 14 foot telescoping surfrod. If I remember right I was using #1 gamakatsus ( two on dropper loops).

I liked fishing the wesport side rather than the ocean shores side because the water deepens quicker on the wesport side. it was good for red tails and moon eyes.

Thanks,

Somebody told me that you can use root beer or motor oil colored grubs on a slip sinker rig for surf perch, Have you ever fished this way and had any luck?
