OK I know nothing about Salt boats

Does anyone know the approximate amount of hours a 140 hp Evinrude could have on it before needed to be rebuilt?

What are the advantages and disadvantages of an outboard vs. an inboard outboard. Pertaining to...

Life expectancy
Maintenance
Reliability

Boat will be used almost every weekend in the salt and will not be moored, it will be trailered.

I am trying to decide what type of motor to go with. Currently I am looking at a 20' 1989 Glasply with a 140 hp Evinrude outboard.

Just my opinion here. I've owned both a inboard/outboard and an outboard. I think the outboard is easier to mantain and gives you more fishing room in the boat.
The inboard/outboard doesn't require, but it's a good idea to have a fresh water cooling system installed and that can get pretty expensive.

I'll throw in my .02 here. I've owned several I/O boats but no outboards. After riding in a buddy's outboard boat last year, I swear I'll never own another I/O. Yes, I/O's are generally automotive engines with a proven track record of reliability, gas mileage etc. But the handling, steering and fishability of an outboard is a far greater advantage. I've never been much for two strokes, but now that 4 stroke outboards are available, that's what I'd do.

Thanks for the info guys

I have heard rumors that the outboards are only good for something like 500 hours. That doesn't seem like very much time......?

I've been told that outboards need a rebuild after about a 1000 hrs. They're still good after that too. Like most mechanical things, do the periodic maintenance on 'em and extend the life.

I owned a 350 CI inboard / outboard with Volvo drive for overr 20 years and could rebuild everything on the boat with my eyes closed when I gave the boat away to a friend. Now I have an outboard on the big boat and love it. The gas mileage is twice what the old one was and it is easier to handle...I don't want to repair anything anymore so the outboard is good..I can't figure any of it out. An old outboard is a potential can of worms but then again here is something to always remember:

Break
Out
Another
Thousand..............BOAT

I had somewhere on one of these boards that current outboards have a expected service life of 1500 to 2000 hours. I tend to put about 50 hours a year onto my motor, so even 500 hours is a ten year life. I can live with that.

I've got damn near 1000 hours on my Yami in less than 2 years (yeah, I fish a lot) and have yet to even change the plugs, let alone do anything other than change the oil and filter occasionally. It comes with a 3 year warranty, but fat chance I'll blow it up before then the way it is running. rolleyes

Ok I'm back; I got that worm that is infecting XP. Pretty simple fix and all it does is make you re-boot all the time.

Thanks for all the help guys’ outboard sounds like the way to go. The boat I was looking at has sold but oh well I still don't know exactly what to get yet.

So far I want an outboard with the Alaskan Bulkhead for sure.

Anyone heard of Newbay or Marquee (spelling)? I heard they are the company that bought out Glasply?
