Fished today with my Dad, Son Cory and his future Father-In-Law Bruce. Started at Pt. Defiance and worked the slag pile, clay bamks and end of the point before and after the morning tide change with only 2 flounders, 3 blackmouth shakers and a 3 inch silver to show for it.
Been reading about the spankings that Easy Limits has been puttin' on em' at Redondo Beach so we picked up the gear and headed up the way. Well having never fished up past Browns Point and not really knowing how far up Redondo was (I had looked at a map before we went out) we get to what I think is the place (it had a public fishing pier doesn't Redondo??) and set the gear on the riggers at 50 and 60 feet with a diver out the back. Now mind you this is noon and to only set the gear at that depth was against every thing I had ever learned, but thats where Easy Limits was nailin' em' at so OK!?!?!?
Man 10 minutes after we get going and my Sons yellin' Fish On!! He grabs the rod and I start to get the other gear up and about 100 ft from the boat the fish comes out of the water...this just confuses the hell out of me cause it was way to big to be a silver and I have never seen a king do that. Well by now he had handed off the rod to Bruce (did I mention that Bruce is from Indiana and the biggest fish He has ever caught is a 3 lb. Kokenee) and the fish just takes a huge run and comes out of the water again!!! By now I figure out that Cory had backed the drag all of the way off before he handed off the rod and the fish had taken about 300 ft' of line. So we tighten the drag and have all the gear up and the fight is on. After 10 minutes or so Bruce says "my left arm is about to fall off", we all laughed and I said good that what it is supposed to feel like. It takes a good 15 minutes to get the fish close to the boat and of course when it sees us heads back to Seattle!! Finally Bruce slides the fish up and I net the bad boy. Ended up being a beautiful hen that weighed 23 lbs on the nose (digital scale).
My Son did get one more an hour or so later that was a 15 lb buck.
So when we get back to the dock and tell the fish checker where we were it ends up we were really at Dash Point (thats close to Redondo isn't it??). Fish count for the day was 19 kings, 6 pinks and 5 silvers for 59 boats at 4:00PM. We did see lots of fish jumping and surfacing while we were at Dash Point. Hot setup of the day was a 3.5" Coyote green/glow spoon behind a green/silver Hot Spot. It will be a day that Bruce and Cory will talk about for years to come!! And another learning experiance for me...Thanks Easy Limits for almost getting me up to Redondo.
Good luck and tight lines, Jeff
