I am using the kingfisher spoons and am having trouble getting them down quickly. I am fishing from my kayac and dont want to use a downrigger since its hard enough to mess with the regular things already. I know to not put any weight on the spoon itself since it ruins the action, but what about a couple of split shot a few feet up from the spoon? Does anyone use this?

SD,
I have done as you have suggested before with limited results, yes it caught fish (at least one nice king) but not alot. Im NOT a die hard spoon tosser, I maybe throw them 2 or 3 times a year. Most of the guys that use them exclusively will probably equate wieghting the spoon as heresy, unless you are talking about thin bladed spoons (TBS's).
How heavy is this spoon you are using? Ive never used a "kingfisher", are they a trolling specific spoon? Most "casting" type spoons designed for salmon should have no problem getting down into the "zone".

SD,

I assume you are fishing the Nisqually Delta area??? I agree with RL, if you want to cast spoons, you'll need to chose a heavier spoon or you might try adding a 1-2oz banana sinker about 4' up the line. If not, the Kingfisher does come in heavy gauge brass for casting.

If you decide to go with adding the sinker, why not try motor mooching (kayak style) or some type of "stop-and-go" out in thin water by McCallister or a little closer to Zittles.

Thanks for the feedback. I think I bought the wrong style kingfisher since they are very light and feel they like they are made of fiberglass which tells me they are most likely trolling. It was a rush buy when I got them. It was 10 minutes until sportco closed and I was running around just grabbing stuff quickly because I was short on time. I think
I will take your advice on the coyote silver spoons you gave earlier, G.I Joes is having a sale on them and they should be heavy enough to go deep. Thanks again.

I fish out of a small motorboat, and don't want a downrigger either, and I use banana weights about 3-4 feet up from the spoon. At least that's what I have read to do.

I kayak fish and last year I switched one reel over to leaded line to help keep spoons down without having to add so much weight.

I don't trust the weight of the spoon alone to keep it down. W/O weight, I find they will ride up to the surface.

I will also use a diver/flasher and spoon behind my kayak. Adds a lot of drag, but gets you down to the fish!

Good luck
