hey, my nephew broke his rod in alaska 2 weeks ago. just above the conector ferrel about 6 inches. he sent it to fenwick and they sent it back saying he did not take proper care of the rod, it has a nick in the shaft below the connector. fenwick said it could not repair and di\oes not have this rod any more. the rod is 9 1/2 feet long, light action. they would sell him an 8 foot rod to replaced it for an ungoddly amount of money, $190.00.
Help, hey TH. custom, what can you do? note: fishing was great for him, caught lots of reds and abif king.

I have always had great service from Pure Fishing, so your post confuses me a bit. Pure fishing owns Berkley, Abu, Fenwick and I am sure a few others.
Did you try calling the folks at Pure Fishing?
Sorry for the hassle.

Dogfish;
my nephew actually sent the rod to fenwick for warranty. i fnd out it is an 11 foot rod, not 9 1/2 ft.
they sent it back saying it had not been taken care of properly and would not repair under any warranty, implied or stated.
pretty clear to me.

Perhaps he knows how it was broken. His fault or not? If his fault I think he should consider it a lesson in rod handling and pay the price by buying a new rod of whatever brand he likes.
If he is certain the breakage was not his fault, then he should carefully read his warrenty. If the warrenty covers breakage not caused by a defect, then he should keep writing to whatever level of the company it takes to get satisfaction.

Wow, that is a change. Years ago, I broke a fenwick, by getting it tangled in the anchor rope. I sent it in, explaining that it was my fault, and could they please sell me a new tip. After a while, I sent them another letter, asking what their response was. A few days later, I got my rod back, with a new tip. A few days after that, I got another package with a brand new rod!
Needless to say, I was pretty high on Fenwick for a long time after that. But then they got sold a few times, and it seems like they lost sight of the northwest marketplace. So I moved on.
I still use that rod, however. Sold the other one to a friend, and he's still catching fish on it.

Wow, that really sucks!
I would suggest that your nephew call them directly, ask to speak with a supervisor, etc. Sometimes elevating something to the next level, politely, can get the issue solved. If not, there is always another level. Sometimes people imagine themselves as "king of their own domain", and they forget why they are there for, maybe your nephew ran into "the bad apple."
I am sorry to read about his experience. I sent in an older Fenwick reel that exploded in March, from back when everything had a lifetime warranty. I got it replaced free of charge, except for my cost of shipping.
If all else fails, send it to me and I will make an attempt to get the matter resolved. Your nephew has nothing to lose but a broken rod.
Take care,
Andy

Sounds odd... some stores like Outdoor Emporium in Seattle now have a swap policy on Fenwicks.
Bring in your busted rod, give em 10 bucks, and they will give you a new one off the shelf.

I would think they would take care of the problem. However, I quit buying Fenwicks after buying a decent downrigger/mooching rod ($90)) from Outdoor Emporium and broke it 2 times inside of a year. The guys at Outdoor Emporium said the warranty period would end after one year plus is was costing $14 each time I returned it. To make a long story short, I gave them the rod back and bought an Eagle Claw ($25) and a Shimano ($35) and haven't had any problems since.
Note: Every boat needs a yellow eagle claw rod on board.

I broke two WalMart Abu rods, or my pal and his brother did, one on a bottom snag and one that tangled in the downrigger release. I called the tech support phone number in the Pure Fishing website and spoke to their representative. The rod is called a Salmonid, and is made just for WalMart. She assured me that the quality was just as good as the rest of their rods, and to send them in with 9.99 check for return freight and a letter describing what happened. Since these were combo's with Abu6500C3 reels, she said I would need to send the reels with them. After pleading my case that I still need to fish and these are my only reels for salmon and are loaded with expensive braided line, she put me on hold to talk to a supervisor and then came back and said to just send the rods, since the issue is with the rods and not the reels. They would do this because they had a large surplus of the rods in inventory, and would not have to break combos to replace just rods. I figured I may have to send a check for two new rods, but to my suprise about a week later a tube arrived at the house with two brand new rods.
My pal who borke the rods replaced them with some fantastic Rapala casting rods from Sportco. So, now I have a couple of nice rods for me and a couple of cheapies for guests. I am all set for rods now, and love the Abu's.
Call the tech support for Pure Fishing and speak to someone and tell them what happened. If you can, get their name and send the rod to their attention. Let them know of the knick in the rod and see what they will do. Phone calls are cheap, and if you try you will find someone who will work with you.
If I had my receipt, I could have taken it back to WalMart for a warranty swap, but I didn't have it. I have since broke the tip off one of the Rapala's, took it back to Sportco for a new one. After a little stern talking to about rod care from Bill Herzog, they gave me a new one. Funny, I thought he would be taller......
