Hello I am a rookie to this site but I was woundering if someone can give me some more imput on this decision, I am looking into buying a new sled, and I can't figure out if I want a 2 stroke pump or a 4? There isn't much of a price difference, but the salesman said that the 4 is better on gas mileage but a little slower off of the start?.. Any suggestions?

I'm no expert on outboards but I think the jet conversion cuts so much efficiency out of the motor that a 2 stroke might be better for the power to weight ratio if nothing else. The newer DFI (direct fuel injection) outboards are quite efficient too

Yea I am starting to lean towards the 2stroke, it doesn't have all of the maintenence. spend the extra 300$ somewhere else.

2 strokes definitely have a better power to weight ratio, and they get up and go faster because they make power every other other cycle, as opposed to once every 4 cycles like a 4 stroke

the definite advantage that a 4 stroke has though, is that it's cleaner than typical 2 strokes. the disadvantage is that they are heavier and cost more, and i think not as perfected as most 2 strokes

I have a 2 stroke Yamaha 90 because my older boat has a heavy rear end with the gas tank across it plus the kicker motor and I needed the lightest possible motor.
However, if the boat is designed for the additional weight of a 4 stroke, I'd definately go that way because they are much more fuel efficient, they are almost silent and they don't stink when idling. At over 2 bucks per gallon, that will add up!

I worked this issue last winter wile ordering my new sled I went with 2 stroke motors
the reasons, power and speed out of the hole, weight of motors, cost of motors

as far as smoke is concerned I started using Amsoil for the mix,and don't have smoke, also my plugs are clean.

Call the guys at 3rivers ask them
