Went there looking for coho but all we could catch were blackmouths 5-15 pounds. Kept moving around but the chinooks were everywhere. Thought they were pinks at first but chinook ID was confirmed by two other boats. Finally got some keeper chinook out in the legal zone outside Tatoosh Island. Never did find any coho, but we are not experts, either, and probably should have went further out.

Neah Bay is an amazing place. It is like the Big Indian told us at the marina: "If you cannot catch fish here, then there is something wrong with you." We were glad nothing was wrong with us.

Glad to hear there is nothing wrong with you. Nice you caught some fish too. But no silvers up there? Whatz up with that? Alot of us down here have visions of silvers stacking off NB just waiting for the starters gun.
No coho? Say it ain't so, joe!

Maybe you just weren't trolling fast enough? Last weekend we caught hundreds of Silvers over three days everywhere from the marina to Swiftsure. We even quit using the downriggers and jigged for them.

These chinooks would bite our line before anything else would. They were shallow too. We felt like we could have caught a 100 of them. In this way they acted just like pinks but they were not pinks. They were small chinooks and we verified this with two other boats. All in all just another crazy fishing experience in the Sekiu/NB area.

PS: It proved difficult to distinguish between immature chinook and pinks. The "teenagers" do not have the large black spots and other characteristics that are described in the regs. Both have black mouth colorings and we finally learned that pinks have upper canine teeth (that you have to really look for) and a flexible lower jaw.

I'm planning n hitting it this weekend. I'll start at swiftsure but I suspect all this rain up here has them stagin in a little closer, maybe in the strait. Either way, they haven't passed through my way yet. So they gotta be out there somewhere! I love big hooknoses in the salt.

I also was trying to see if I could justify another trip. It has really cleared out up there and you don't have to worry about a line at the boat launch. Sekiu, on the other hand, was quite busy.

Just got back from 4 days out of Slayque. Weather went from sun to rain, rough to smooth and clear to fog. But the fish were hot. the pink schools were a hit and miss i just looked for the jumpers. they were in the 5lb + class. with the large tides i found the smaller silvers were hitting in the morning but in the evening they were big the largest being 14 lbs. I ran up almost to NB on Mon. in the fog and found silvers there as well. The bite was kind of sparce at times but there was always action. Just 4oz lead and a cut plug. Even a coulple on i fly with no weight. The capper to the whole trip was the king that was pushing 40lbs. Thank god the leader broke as he came to the boat . That would have hurt turning that one loose. I wish I had more $ and time. The straits have done me well this year.
hello
