I ran a 15' Whaler out to Swiftsure several years ago. Not a trip I will duplicate. However, other than getting a little wet from sticking the bow several times it wasn't that bad. We did have another boat to pal-around with, I would never attempt a trip like that solo.
I always thought it would be fun to do the inside passage in a Whaler just for yucks. The closest I have come is circumventing the San Juan Islands in one day starting and ending in Bellingham Bay. Six gas tanks later, a mild sun burn is all I have to show for an eight hour trip at wide open throttle. I have the route plotted on a chart in my garage, but nobody seems to understand my sense of adventure.
In all I have had six Whalers and thirteen OMC motors. I have an '81 Montauk now and have endured some knarly water- there are not many boats that are twenty years old that I would trust in open water. My oldest daughter actually lost front tooth on a wave hitting her face on my butt down in Ilwaco. She still laughs about that today. I can't say enough about the durability of the boats- I have dozens of stories; swampings, flips, crashes, beachings (not all of that happened to me- I have never flipped okay
)... they are great boats.
