You know...it's kind of funny (voodoo) almost about the issue of bananas on a boat. My friend John is an absolute freak...almost thrown mates overboard who have brought bananas on board, eaten bananas for breakfast, or even touched a banana nut muffin. True...the skunk seems to be on with the yellow phallic symbol on board.

My Q? what or where does this story really come from? Who first discovered the badness of 'nanas and fishing?

Can't help you with your ?s but Curt Carlisle owner of Chas' NA Dream Guide Service said the same thing NO NANAs,he said the potassium in the nanas drives the fish away .They also did a test and the fish steared clear of the potassium. Why I do not know. fishy

Someone once told me it stems back to the old days when ships would bring clumps bannanas on board and they'd contain poisonous spiders (Black Widows or Tarantulas, can't remember which).

I think the entire idea is to silly. I like bananas, often carry them on me or in ther boat, and have never seen any evidence they hurt the fishing at all. The next time the fish are biting good I'm going to put a fillet of banana skin on my hoochie. I bet it works fine.

The banana thing goes back to the Polynesians who traveled the S. Pacific in their canoes. They carried bananas along with them on their journeys and planted them on most of the islands but it was taboo to take them out on a fishing trip. The taboo found it's way to the USA through Hawaii.

I heard somewhere that it's an old sailors superstition, which was originally due to the big hairy spiders that lived in the banana bunchs.

It's a crock. I eat bananas in the boat all the time, and I caught a fish just last year.

It's an excuse for people that aren't catching fish. Mark

I figure it this way:
If I don't catch a fish, at least I've got a banana to eat.

Actually a Heteropoda venatoria (Huntsman or Banana Spider). Very nasty, and very deadly.

They still occasionally make it over on ships, although Bananas are fumigated at the source to kill them.....

Where can I get some of that fumigation stuff? It's taking way too long for my boat to recover from a passengers banana episode. It went something like this..."boy fishing is sure slow today....want a banana?"

I like the cut plug nanner Idea. Not to pricey at .79 a pound. Figure you could get (2) good plugs and a couple of spinners out of each one.

Anybody got a good brine to tuffen those nanners up?

I tend to use the green ones for plug cuts, and the browner ones for halibut. Banana Boat (SPF 45) for scent! Good Stuff.

I fished with a guy who happened to bring an entire bunch of bananas. Fortunately, I found them while rooting through his cooler and tossed them overboard. Man, was he pissed. He scoffed at me when I told him the superstition. By the end of the day, I had hooked double digits of coho and he hadn't touched a fish. Personally, I think the fish Glubs penalized him for the nanners, and I was rewarded for tossing them overboard. laugh

On the other hand, I've fished with Quinault Guide Robbin Rhoades who routinely eats nanners while fishing. He told me the trick was to let the nanners ripen up a bit and to feed a chunk to a crow. Once you do that, you won't get bit by the nanner curse. He caught fish that day, so that tribal secret must have worked. eek

Funny stuff.

Just don't have any nanners with you if you fish with Bob. eek Matter of fact, don't even wear a yellow rain coat or yellow rain pants!

I just say "No" to bananners.

Surprised GutZ didn't jump on this one yet. He may be out fishing already.

Anyway, this spring on the Columbia/Multnomah channel, we had fished all morning, catching one nice springer early. I had nuthin, no take downs all weekend. Around 11:30 AM, you know when you are half snoozin, a bannana peel floated by on my side of the boat. Ahahah, did I get some guff from the guys. But about the time that bannana peel was over my gear, WHAM! Screamin line, could hardly get the pole out of the holder, then about 100 yard down river that nooky popped straight out of the water like a champagne cork, slapped back down and threw the hook.
So, do I credit the bannana with the strike or the loss? I think with the strike, so I like bannanas!

I went fishing in Daytona a couple summers back. My partner and I packed all kinds of food and drink with us. The weekend happened to be a large offshore fishing derby - which we were not in.

As we motored out of the dock the captain asked if we had any fruit - happily - we said - "Oh ya - we got it all and lots of it"....he asked us about bannanas - we showed him,,,he threw them in the water fast and far as the first mate could.

We nailed the fish that day and had we of been entered we would have won the 1st place pot in the derby.

No nannas for me.

Ya Auntie,

That was a terrible thing to do to someone. Fortunatly we still pulled it off by catching several Summer-runs.

Just think how many more we would have gotten if the nannas weren't there.

If it would have been my boat we would have had a bad day with me beetchin' all day.

Who did that? I owe them something like a swift kick in the azz.

No banana's in my boats.

I had a couple of buddies out 2 weeks ago and as we left my house I asked if they had any bananas and the answer was no. of course. Well, after loosing 2 in a row I asked again if they had bananas and Warner pulls out one. I about crapped my pants and got on him pretty hard. Lost 9 in a row that morning and did finally finish with a great day but the nanna went overboard.
