"boater" - Recover from what?

If I were a wild salmon I would swim around and around in the ocean and sound until I found the Skagit River and then I would swim up the Skagit just a little ways but not so far that I would get sick and start to die because I would want to be fresh and tasty when I eventually found Plunker's bait and then I would bite Plunker's bait and get hooked on the very first bite and then Plunker would reel me in and bonk me and bleed me and gut me and then take me home for dinner and I would be a very very very happy wild salmon for having served my purpose which is to be savored by someone who truly appreciates me. laugh

If I were a wild salmon I wouldn't want anything to do with any group, I would let nature decide my fate. The fishing groups either want to kill me or take my picture out of the water so I can suffocate while they compose the photo for bragging rights. The environmental groups just want to use my plight to advance NFR causes and get their name in the papers. Some groups name themselves after me or my cousins so people will donate money to them or they sue people using me as the scapegoat so they can get money...geez can't I just be left alone?

Well since no one of the fishing / conservation / enviromental groups never get any say in the matter other than being allowed to spout off to the closed ears of the government agencies involved I don't think it matters what group I would pick..

Thats right.. WDFW,NMFS,ODFW , Ect. give a damn what any fisherman thinks or what any wild salmon would want. They already have it made up in their minds what they are going to do and how they are going to do it. The public has no voice at all with these agencies NONE!!!

I agree wild fish managment is a complete farce. No agency is doing anything to really save wild salmon anywhere!! just liots of lip service and wasted money..

boater - I basically agree with what Grandpa2 said.

The environmental conditions are probably the most significant factor affecting salmon numbers in the long term. Most of the environmental effects are the byproduct of logging practices that are long past events and of development, which is currently happening.

Many of the past logging practices have been modified and further modification is unlikely in the near future.

Development is pretty much dependent on zoning and permitting processes so in that I would want the state legislators and county officials to be my protector.

The most significant short term factor seems to be over harvest. It can be controlled on the national and state level so for that I would think NOAA Fisheries and the WDFW are the best protectors. A fishing group that has done much in that respect is the RFA so they deserve mention here.

The whole Idea of the need for recovery comes as a result of low returns due to cycles in the ocean conditions, which are something we can only acknowledge. The long cycle has been quite favorable lately with good to record returns of wild fish pretty much across the board. That is why I facetiously asked you, "recover from what?" cause the times they are a changing.

Basically though...
As a fish I would vote for the Audubon Society cause if they have their way the fishing will be for the birds.

Plunker i don't know what planet you are on but nowhere down my way are there any wild runs that are doing well. The only recovery taking place anywhere in the Columbia drainiage is lower columbia Chums salmon. All other wild runs are in the toilet as bad as they ever were or only slightyl better.

Thanks Rob! I forgot all about the Columbia.
The Columbia certainly is a disaster of epic proportion.
Ever since they started using that environmentally friendly, CFC free foam, the darn stuff kept falling off and knocking tiles loose. As a result, the Columbia gets toasted. It seems the real blame is NASA's political correctness in catering to environmental extremism. But here we are back to earth, sans global warming and without the Columbia. What a shame.
Earth to Rob, Can you hear me? rolleyes
