I have seen a few lads use this method but not up close. Looks like a cross between gear and flyfishing. Could anyone tell me more. Thinking of trying it out. How much are the reels and what kind of rods, etc ???

I use mine primarily in the salt, but tried casting it in the rivers a few times last spring. Without a brake on the reel, you have to really be careful or you will end up with a big mess, it is definately an art. One of the nice features of useing a centerpin is frespooling line, I think you have better control.

You can pick up a centerpin for as cheap as $80.00 on up to $250 and more. I like the Shimano's and Daiwa's, they have a wider palming rim for fighting fish.

I see you are from Ireland, what kind of fishing you have out there? Any sea going salmonoids? My Grandparents are from Donegal, I'll make it out there someday.

The guys up in Vancouver B.C. are the original steelheaders who fished with centerpins, you could probably get alot of good info from members of this forum.

Centerpins are popular in British Columbia much more so than down here in the States. Yes, they are a hybrid fly/gear kind of thing. The reels are single action just like a fly reel. The rods are generally long, at least 10.5 feet, and have a soft action much like a fly rod.

Terminal gear is the same as a drift fisher with a level-wind reel would use. It is something to see watching an expert work a 'pin. It's an art form in itself, much like spey casting.

A good centerpin reel can be very expensive, and there are a few name brands to choose from. Milner and Islander are two that come to mind.
