October 21, 2003

Contact: Dan Ayres, WDFW, (360) 249-4628

Razor clam dig approved Oct. 24-26 on three beaches

OLYMPIA – Clam diggers today got the green light to proceed with a razor clam dig Friday through Sunday, Oct. 24-26, on evening tides at three of Washington’s coastal beaches.

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) approved the three-day opening at Long Beach, Twin Harbors and Mocrocks beaches after a series of marine toxin tests confirmed that the clams on those beaches are safe to eat.

No clam digging will be allowed before noon on any beach during the three-day opening.

“We have plenty of clams at those three beaches, the test results look good and we’re ready to roll,” said Dan Ayres, WDFW coastal shellfish manager.

The Red Lion... :p

Bring your umbrellas and blue tarps... who know whats in store weatherwise this weekend.

The State Park campground is a good one if you can get in there? Dont know if it fills up or not for the winter clam tides.

Twin harbors campground outside of Westport is good if you can find a site unoccupied. If you go to Kalaloch, the campground there fills up very quick. and the beach is right there.

Low tides are even later (definitely will be dark) than last dig. We did OK before the sunset but after that it was pretty tough. I'd sure like to see a dig during the daylight. How did everyone else do last dig, especially after dark?

Unfortunately SteelDon the low tide during the day dont happen till the spring. Hopefully we will still have a few clams left in the quota by then...

Love those morning tides. Hungover, half drunk, groggy eyed, nothing like hair of the dog at 6:00 in the morning beer ... Nice thing is you can clean clams in the daylight.

The night tides can be really good, I find that a lantern works way better than a flashlight. Plus I usually have my wife hold the lantern while I dig. A helluva lot easier that way...

Oh yeah carry and extra lighter in a dry pocket... the last time out we had a wave knock the lantern out and then get the lighter wet. Had to walk back to the car for a fresh lighter...

We did better after dark. Used the lanterns. They weren't showing well, and the lantern put a diff. shadow on the show then the setting sun. Productivity picked up 2 1/2 limits 2 diggers 1 lantern packer (daughter n law) 45 mins.

We got there a little late and spent about 45 min on the first 1/2 limit before we got the lanterns.

Lots of fun! Never seen so many diggers and rigs on the beach.

Man you talk about the possibility for a party!

cool

( i think there were more people at Copalis than WDFW said there were clams dug) confused

Personally, I like digging during cocktail time beer

You can keep those daybreak digs rolleyes

I've dug near Copalis a few times, but this weekend we're going to Westport and dig near Grayland. I've never dug there before.

I'm not sure exactly where to go. I guess we'll just look for the crowds?

Y'all can dig in this cool fall weather in the dark.

We've got pver 1000 we brought home :p this year and I'll be relaxing right here on the couch!

Don't know how long it might be an issue, but remember there has been a tremendous amount of wood ejected into the surf with these huge floods as of late. Watch those waves everyone!!
