A couple of days ago i was hooked up into a very nice bright red king. It gave a great fight and was in really good shape. The weird part is that there was an old white colored king swimming in formation with my fish. This old gal was so close that I thought she was going to break my line as she kept getting caught up on my lead and then snapping free as I moved the rod and line around. This went on for about fifteen minutes. My question is has anyone heard of salmon acting like this. I was fishing near the spawing grounds and it is obvious that these two were hooked up together but I never heard of then staying together like that. Give me some opinions on this. I am by no means an expert and would love to learn more.
Thanks

Such behaviour is not too uncommon. I have seen it several times before including one instance in salt water at LaPush many years ago, with a pair of 30+ pound chinook

I wonder if any "bio's" have studied when the selection of a mate occurs?
I know this was a right down the middle fast ball, but I can't resist.

I have a friend wh is a fisheries biologist. He always tells me his main area of study in college was spawning.

I suspect that mate selection usually occurs just a bit before the bars close. I hear the Illwaco and Westport bars can get pretty rough.

I have a suggestion:

If a salmon gets buy the 5 year gauntlet and is fortunate enough to make it back to it's spawning grounds....LEAVE IT ALONE!
