I am going to be in Hawaii, Kona Island, from November 15 to December 5.

I plan on doing a couple charters and some beach fishing.

For the beach fishing I will be bringing a 1265C topped with a 6501C3 spooled with 30-LB power pro.

Any suggestions on lures?

I have no clue on this one…….

I'd put my money into a deap sea charter and go for a 500lb marlin.

We have a house in Kona, mostly there is reef fish which are not to fun and poisunus to eat ,except to the locals which have grown immune to them. trust me one of our friends had 1 reef fish and 3 days he was on the toilet. We have fished on the Reel CLass out of Honokohow (sp) harbor. There is one place we fished that was fairly close to shore that held some wahoo but it was a big drop off. You might try renting a skif and going out to one of the bouys around the island which usually produce 5-20lb skipjack tuna, we trolled a pink skirted jig, looked like half humpy jig, half pink bass jig. Reef fish are small, you could try fishing for sharks but thats probly not a good idea as you would be prfishing rfrom shore and swimmers, i think you get the idea laugh I hope this helps. O and i think mahi season is kickin during the winter but i am not sure.

I'd have some 3 to 6 inch rubber tailed jigs. Maybe 1/4 to 1.5 oz. With black, white, and yellow, I'll bet you could catch fish about anywhere around the world.

I went to Christmas Island some years back, and they recommended jigs, and floating plugs. I can't remember the brand, but they were in Cabela's. They were about 6 inches long.

I think you may want some steel wire leader, if you run into barracuda. If that's the case, a steel wire jock strap may be advisable, as well. wink

Have fun.

If you look at pictures of locals holding fish you will see them use their hat to hold the fish, that's because many their local fish have poisonous spines. A friend from work did well there with a white buzz bomb[could find them local].

I'd get ahold of a phone book and call a local tackle shop. They are really the best source for bait and information. When we worked on the high school across the road and up the hill from the Honokohau boat harbor I would go to Kona Fishing Tackle just down the road a ways. Phone was 808 326 2934. As far as a charter I've gone on several but the captain I liked the most now works the DLNR now so I would probably call The Charter Desk at the marina. Ask for Amber if she still works there. Phone 808 329 5735 or email at charter@aloha.net Also note that these are 4 year ago numbers but not too much changes over there.
