I just bought a new used boat last saturday. Its a Arima Sea Explorer 1511. It has a 70 hp Evinrude, scotty elec downriggers, and lots of other goodys. Are there any other Arima owners on here? Im going to need to get a kicker motor for it but I need to sell my old boat first. If anyone is looking for a great aluminum fishing boat I put mine in the classified adds on this site.

Great choice. I have the Arima SeaHunter with a 70hp Yamaha. Feel free to ask questions. I've done just about anything that can be done(wiring, engine swap, rhino-lining, fuel filter & tanks, black box, anchor roller, etc) to my fishing machine.

Why would you put a black box in a fiberglass boat?

ET,
Do you have a kicker motor on your boat? If so what size? Do you think a 6 hp is big enough for my boat?

For the same reason you would put it in an aluminum boat.... actually it has nothing to do with the boat construction. It is for the downrigger.

I have an old 6hp Johnson. 6hp is plenty. Pushes me at 5 or 6 mph. When I finally upgrade, I'm going with the 6 or 8hp four stroke Yamaha. The only reason I might go with the 8hp is because it is the exact same size and weight as the 6hp and who knows, maybe someday I will get a bigger boat.

Well, I suppose if you have electric downriggers and they are hooked up in some strange way. But it actually has to do with the ground plan (which the down riggers are part of. But if the power source is set up correctly a glass boat works just fine without it.

BW,
The owners manual that came with my Pro-Troll black box says that in most cases the box is needed more on non-aluminum boats than aluminum. Check out the pro-troll web site they have a FAQ area.

ET - if you go with a four stroke, avoid the 6 hp because it's only a single cylinder versus the 2 cyclinder 8 hp. I have the 6 hp on my sled and it vibrates like crazy. I used to have a 6hp 2 stroke (got stolen) that was a 2 cylinder. It ran much smoother than this 1 cylinder. If I'd of known better I would have gotten the 8 hp.

Something to think about.

Go Harley, are you talking Yamaha 6hp four stroke? My neighbor has one and it has two spark plugs.... The Yamaha 6 & 8hp are identical except for carburetor jets....

Unless I'm really going senile.

If you are using it to try and attract fish then maybe. I do not know for sure it that works.

If you are using it in case there is a leakage current issue then what I said is still correct.

DB15,

I haven't posted it for sale yet but I have a 4 stroke 8hp yamaha short shaft that is a 2002 purchased new in 2003. I used it this summer on my 19' boat. I just bought a 23' and I need to upgrade and get a long shaft.
I need to find my receipt but I think I paid 1676.00 new (maybe 1876.00).
If your interested I'll locate it and attach a dollar value to it.
I will be out of town this weekend but email if interested...Pillarking

Actually, the current your boat puts out is from the different metals in the water interacting with each other, not from the hull at all. Aluminum outdrive, zincs, steel cable, stainless steel, all act with water at differnt rates, which creates a charge. Add salt water, and it is worse yet. If you look at a dry cell battery, it is just two different metals in contact with each other creating an electrical charge as they dissolve each other, so to speak. Therefore, every boat will have a small electrical charge around it, even without downriggers from the interaction of the water on the metals present. If you have a ground problem on your electrical system, or all of these metals are connected physically, you have even more of a problem. The hull material doesn't matter, you still have the same metals in the water. Now drop a couple of steel cables a couple of hundred feet down with bare lead balls on the end and you have just extended a couple of antennas to take this electrical charge down in the water to your bait. I thought my glass boat was fine until I checked it out. I now have a black box I will install next week.

Duroboat,

I've got an Arima SR21. Had it for about a year and have not done a lot of modifying yet, but I'm always looking for new toys. I have the 8h Yamaha kicker on mine and it is all I need. You should enjoy your new boat. Also, the factory in Auburn can be very helpfull if you have anything that needs to be fixed or replaced.

Thanks Guys,
I thought a 6 hp would be plenty for the little boat. And I was wondering about the single cylinder performance. Looks like if I buy a 6 hp it should be a yamaha. I know I want a four stroke so I can run it off the main tank.

pillarking,
Do you know what it costs to change the short shaft to long shaft?? How much are you going to ask for your motor?
