I was very fortunate to have witnessed the awesome sight of a rather large pod of Orca feeding on chum salmon between Edmonds and Kingston on my way home last Thursday. They were spread out across the sound actively feeding and just generally cavorting around. Some were small, others were quite large. Thought you might enjoy some shots I got lucky on. I apologize for the quality of the photos. It was a bit difficult with the low light and a long lens; it was hard to guess where they would come up too. I found the only way I could do it was to shoot without looking through the lens, kind of like shooting from the chest instead of the hip, so that my peripheral vision could catch the next one coming up.
Hope you enjoy the pictures because they're eating all the salmon. Oh well, who's gonna argue with one of these guys?
Humm, they kinda look like Nessie, don't they?

That would be awesome, a small price to pay for memories that will last a lifetime.

Excellent shots, Mooch!

I have only seen orcas once off the ferries, and that was Pt. Townsend-Keystone around 1985. I guess I am due for another show sometime soon.

as soon as the chum disapear they will turn their attention to larger prey and will probably take 200-500 seals and sea lions before heading back to open water

Cool.

I got in the middle of them between Jeff Head and Kingston last week right at sunset. I was traveling North and they were all around me for about fifteen minutes or so, about twenty feet away from me, at the closest.

Here's a link to some pictures I took.

But what happened with the man overboard? I haven't heard a word. Have you heard anymore?

It sure was cool with whales all around me, close and personal. I was fishin alone, and it was just me and the orcas.

The picture of the whales with the mountain is my favorite too. I wish it was in focus, but it does show how pretty it was right then at sunset - a special evening.

And the man overboard, I never heard. There wasn't as much CG activity as I would have expected, so I suspect it might have been a bogus report that they felt obligated to check out. I was in the area, so when I heard it on the VHF, I gave'em 45 minutes or so. If somebody really had fallen off the ferry, they woulda been getting cold FAST. I did catch a bit of the news that night, but I assumed it was up North by the border - a man overboard call got the cops out, but it turned out to be a guy with a kayak full of ganja. Wish I knew more.
