You guys probably talked about this issue in the past, but I have not been around to see any posts on this issue.
My curiousity was brought up when I tried to get information on Canadian fisheries.
It was brought to my attention that the BC hatchery stocks are only from second generation captive wild broods.
This system seems great.
Are there any US hatcheries using this method?

Thanks

I don't know of any captive rearing projects in the northwest. That doesn't mean there aren't any just means I don't know of them.
What is becoming popular however is a wild brood stock. That is taking only wild fish to generate stock for the hatchery. This is very popular among anglers because they provide much better sport than stocks that have been domesticated for years or even decades.
The most notable such hatchery program is the snyder creek project on the Sol Duc. I am sure a search of the archives will give you a lot of info on that project,
Also such projects exsist on the North Umpqua, Wilson and i believe the Nestucca in Oregon ( i am sure there are others).

These projects are great in so much as their ability to create good fisheries. However there is no evidence that they are better ecologically than any other hatchery program. This topic is being studied thoughtfully by the Kalama research team and I look forward to seeing the results of their study in 2008.

Projects like these would strongly indicate the environmental conditions for fish.
Good environmental conditions=more wild stock=more first generation hatchery releases.

Sounds like a great plan for both the native fish and the hatchery sports fishery.

Hate to tell ya, but the Canadians are having the same issues with hatchery production that we yanks are.... some have been effective and some have not. This is particulalry true of the coho hatcheries on the Island.
