Looking at/for line spoolers and not finding many options. Am I missing some models that I should know about before I buy one?

Berkley has a inexpensive manual spooler for about $25. and then an electric one for a couple hundred. Are there others out there I have not yet found? If so, where?

I am interested in knowing what models board members may use, and advantages/disadvantes you have found with each.
(I'll fill about 10-15 reels/year)

Thanks in advance.

A number 2 pencil works pretty good for me.
Its gotta be a number 2, number 1 wont work.... :p

10-15 reels seems to be hardly worth the expence???

When my wife sees me with a new spool of line she heads for a the pencil drawer. Works fine.

For years I got the line off my reels by hooking it to my daughter's belt loop and having her run down the hill. She won 't do it any more. Maybe she thinks married women don't do auch things. Or it could be I set the hook too hard one too many times?

laugh

fishing off the I-5 overpass works pretty good for taking line off reel too...

Keep a good grip on the rod and loosen the drag just a bit...

I have the same question. Spooling a levelwind is easy with the pencil, but my spinning reel is a different story. Even if you set it up so the line comes off the spool the same direction, it has to get twisted because the spools are very different diameters so one turn of the reel is not one turn on the line spool. I also realize that one you cast the line out and retrieve a few times the whole thing gets twisted up anyway, but it would be nice to start out straight.

The way I spool spinning reels is I put the spool in a bowl of luke warm water, let it soak for a few minutes, then reel it up flipping the spool over every ten or so cranks. This has always worked for me.

DL,
Take about 10-20 cranks on the reel and flip the spool over. keep flipping and checking every so often to make sure it is not twisting. Soak your spool in hot water for a minute to erase the memory and you're good to go.

My wife got tired of holding the pencils so she picked up the Berkley spooler and gave it to me for christmas a couple years ago. Works fine what I really like is the battery powered de-spooler that came with it, takes the line off a lot quicker than I can by hand. smile

1. Use only the bottom half section of your rod.
2. Sit the spool on the ground.
3. Get a wet towel.
4. Feed the line and tie to the reel.
5. Grip the line between the wet towel.
6. Hold the towel and the line as far up as possible from the foregrip and reel in.

This method will allow you to feel and to adjust the tension.

Good Luck.

The manual Berkley tool works great. Has a nice tension feature to create a drag affect on the filling spool so that you're newly spooled reel won't dig line and break off on your first big fish. It saves me a lot of time.

Hey Thanks!
Glad to hear a couple good reports on the cheap manual Berkley line spooler/stripper.

My daughter's only 6, so I think she's in her line stripping prime - Thanks for the tip Surecatch!

Go the distance and get the Berkley Cyclone.
If you manualy put line on a spinning reel start by laying the spool on it's side label up, crank on about 20-30 turns, drop tip if line twists up flip over if not fill away , you should be able to fill the rest of your reel from the side that does't twist. What your doing is taking the line off the spool the same way it was put on and this keeps it from twisting.
By the way I have the manual Berkley I'd sell for $15. Since I bought the Cyclone I don't need it anymore.
