Dear Washington River Advocates,
This Email is coming to you from the NW office of American Rivers in Seattle -- we are launching a program to encourage our activists to advocate for river issues during the upcoming 2004 Washington State Legislative session. A number of statewide conservation groups have made instream flow one of the top legislative priorities this session, and the river conservation community plans to introduce stream flow legislation during the winter session in Olympia -- we'd like you to be involved! As many of you know, instream flow is of critical importance to the health of our rivers and wildlife. For more info on the proposed Stream Flow Legislation visit here:
http://www.wecprotects.org/state/documents/finalstreams.pdf Most of this new program work will be accomplished from the Northwest Office, so you can expect to see more Emails from us in Seattle, as well as the usual, more urgent, Action Alerts you might receive from our National Office in DC.
Several opportunities to get involved (and gain hands-on experience) will be taking place over the next few months.
In a few weeks, we will also send you information on lobbyist training opportunities in January.
(1) Instream Flow Workshop
For those of you in the Seattle Area, there is a general informational 2-hour workshop about rivers, instream flows, and the upcoming legislative session next Monday December 8th in downtown Seattle.
American Rivers, and other water-related conservation groups present an opportunity to hear about the condition of Washington's rivers and streams and what we all can do to help protect them. Speakers will include several Seattle-area state legislators, water policy experts, and tribal representatives. Attendees will learn how they can get more involved with instream flow legislation that the conservation community plans to introduce during the winter legislative session in Olympia. There will be a Question & Answer session; the first 30 attendees will receive a free water conservation kit; and all attendees can enter a free drawing for an REI gift certificate. Complimentary coffee, sodas, and great snacks!
6:30 - 8:30pm, at the Seattle REI store, Second floor meeting rooms 222 Yale Ave North Free underground parking
(2) Meet your Legislator - December 2003
[Some of you may have been contacted already by phone regarding these evening events]. Before your legislators head to Olympia, please join them in a forum to talk about issues (especially instream flow) of concern to you and the conservation community. Below is a schedule of evening meetings happening around the state over the next few weeks.
Representatives from conservation organizations will be on hand to answer questions; snacks will be provided. Please come out and speak for Washington's rivers! Feel free to contact us in the NW Office with any questions.
