What's the general rule for deciding what size of jig to use while fishing for steelhead? I mostly fish the Sky from the bank with jig and dink float.

Thanks in advance,

Aaron

As far as weight of the jigs is concerned, I like to go as light as the flow /current will allow me to and still get down to the zone I'm targeting.

Usually I like to use 1/8 or even 1/16 ounce jigs if I can--they move around more naturally in the river than bigger jigs.

Also, you should check out Dave Vedder's recent article in the Steelhead edition of STS about fishing w/Jake and try adding that to your arsenal---I hear good things. zip

Sometimes the steelhead will eat surprisingly big jigs. In the winter on the Snake and sometimes John Day I have the best luck with a dink float and a 3/8 oz large bucktail with a whole shrimp. Subtle it ain't. Don't be afraid to experiment.

My favorite jig is almost 4 inches long, with 1/4 oz head. I use that during the fall for summer steelies. It works well in winter as well, but I tend to use other techniques more in the winter.
