Pam Cooking spray. Other's use vasoline but I think that would shorten your cast a bit just because of the resistance.

Darn good question...was having a a serious problem with it myself yesterday. I'd stop to light a smoke, or change spoons, etc. and the end guides would just freeze over...worse than my ex-wife!

Pam? Great idea...I had thought of the Vasilene, but it would have to be a thin coat.

Time to go raid the wife's cookin' stuff..;-)

Thanks!

Mike

I've just learned to stay home in a nice warm bed when it's that cold!

Reel and Line Magic is supposed to help with icing guides.

Just had this discussion this morning! Try a thin layer of Smelly Jelly (shrimp, of course!) on guides.

Fishtales,

Now that's the best option I've heard yet!

I was worried about scenting from the WD-40, but Smelly Jelly's a heck of an idea.

Anise/Shrimp should do the trick...kind of like anti-freeze and an auto-scenter in one..:-)

Some have VERY strong opinions on this and I don't mean to take this thread in a different direction but you might be surprised to hear that WD-40 is actually preferred by some as a fish attractant or masking agent over many other products including smelly jelly. I have actually seen it sprayed on bait like herring, of all things, for king salmon and springers. Although I don't use it myself and do not condone the practice, I was amazed that it did not seem to adversely affect catch rates. So, I doubt it would be a real problem on your guides either. I'd think smelly jelly would get pretty gummy though. My sticks are grimy enough as it is and all I do is dip them in the water from time to time. 'Course you could always blow on or suck on your guides. (Don't go there M.) But whatever you do and no matter what your "buddy" tells you, never put your tongue on them. eek

I agree with you. Those other techniques may work just fine but as long as the river is moving my tips stay clear
