or fanny packs, whatever ya call them, mine from walmart has done well for me fishing the sound from shore but is really inadequate for the rivers, because you need more gear well at least a beginner steelheader like me does. was wondering if they make them for fisherman? what are the best ones for fishing and where can you get them around tacoma area if you can? thanks Ben

I started with a Walmart fanny pack, but found it didn't hold all the things I wanted to carry along with me while I hiked and fished the banks.

The wife got me a Woolrich fishing vest for Christmas, and it is superb at holding everything I need, and more. Like most folks, I keep tackle in smaller boxes which fit well into the pockets, and there are pockets and pouches of all differing sizes to handle everything, including a large one on the back to hold lunch.

Agreed though, on a boat you need to carry more "stuff". My boat is not for rivers (that's why its for sale right now), but I have several larger tackle boxes - one of which will be converted for use on the new sled or drift boat.

I'm not an experienced steelheader, but do catch my share of salmon when the seasons are open, and have access to some good water close by. If your ever up this way (Concrete), drop me a note and we'll head down behind the house and see what we can drum up.

I just made the switch from vest to FANNY PACK and I dont think I will ever go back. I just went to the sportsmans wharehouse and looked for something that would suit my needs. They had many to choose from, the one I got was a white camo and it was large enough to carry all my stuff yet not to large to be an inconvenience. I would just say search around any sports or hunting and fishing store and you should be able to find what your looking for. Good Luck.

I have had a JW outfitter that has worked well for a long time but for Xmas got william Joseph I like better.

If you want you can have my old one. It is beat up looking but works fine. I have a picture of it on a post made earlier(do serch) and you can see it. No charge.

Rockfish, The thing I have found about a pack or a million pocket vest is you feel you have to fill them up with stuff. Many years a go, I was on the upper green doing summer runs wanted to cross the river. Snot rocks, fast deep water, 30 pound vest. Less just say I walked on my hands under water for about 10 yards. KISS {Keep it simple stupid} I got a Waiding Jacket for x-mass lots of room but not some much as I over fill. Get one of them little plastic boxs 6"x12" somthing like that. I tell you what, you can fill that thing up with a nuff stuff fish 3 or 4 ways in a day. Have your pre tyes leaders a roll of lead smelley jelley, bing bang boom you are on your way.
Save the over kill till you get a boat. 4 Rods, 6 boxes of junk 90% of you dont use. You know what I mean.

I also use a wading jacket made out of breathable gor-tex. It's a jacket, rain coat, etc all in one. Not cheap though.

for fanny packs try sportco. they got the stuff. just got one. has more room thani will ever need.

Rockfish I tried a chest pack for the first time this year. I love it. It holds quite a bit of gear and holds it high so i dont soak my gear on deeper crossings. i can also clip my eggs up high so they dont get wet. i love this thing....

i have a vest from xstream that has many, many, pockets and holds everything i need and then some. i also have just a fly fishing chest pack from xstream and it works great for hitting these close to home rivers with minimal gear needed. you are more than welcome to hop in my rig and we will get you a steelie. i fish during the week and bag the weekends. shoot me an email. cs
