Last week I was at the Restaurant in Forks having some breakfast and I overheard a couple of fellows having a discussion over the "Holy Grail" of Steelheading being a fish over 30, not over 20.
I've already read some of the articles that the Real Spoonman and Surecatch have written and they indicate that 20lbs is the mark. I spent the weekend looking over some older literature from Enos Bradner and the like and I couldn't find any mention of the "Holy Grail."
My question is what is the true weight and who first coined this phrase in writing? Thank you...

Seems to me that the definition of all vague terms is best left for the individual to determine.
Someone else's might be to simple catch ANY steelhead.

Yep...so true. But once that blessed event occurs the "limit line" gets raised.
If Griz has a spot open for his Forks trip next weekend it may be that the "blessed event" would occur...one can only hope and cast....and cast...and cast.

Eh, to each their own. I just set 30+ as a goal. Just like I set 75 lbs as a goal for kings. If I reach those goals, I'll set them higher! I'm always happy to catch a steelhead, and treasure any fish that is over 20. One of my most disappointing 20+ pound steelhead was the 27 pound fish out of the Quinault. Didn't fight for crap. Add 3 pounds to that and what do you get? A 30 pound piece-of-crap fighting (dark) buck. Woo, whoo (sarcasm).

I don't think it's just a personal goal or decision, as I remember reading several times that a 20# was considered a trophy and that a 30# was considered the "Holy Grail".
That doesn't mean you have to feel that a particularly awesome ten pounder you've caught isn't a trophy, or, like Parker above, even if you catch a truly heavy fish it can still be a sock.
Fish on...
Todd.

I'd say its a fish 30lbs or more. I've seen alot of pictures of 20lb+ steelies. A 20lb fish isn't all that rare. How often do you hear of or see a 30lber?

60lb king 20lb steelhead 10lb rainbow 100lb Halibut
Is what I have always known to be the big 4 or the pacific slam. I have two but have never focused on the Ironheads and halibut that much.

I've caught a 20+, so it's 30 for me.

The "Holy Grail" is clearly a 30+. I would call a 20+ a trophy, but not the Holy Grail.
