I got notice in the mail that the follow up to the hatchery debacle on the Cowlitz river is scheduled for Tuesday, March 2, 3:00 - 4:00 p.m. and Thursday, March 4, 6:00-7:30 p.m. at the Cowlitz Salmon Hatchery.
Mark LaRiviere is supposed to be there to answer all of our questions...(whatever...)
Debbie Young said "I do want to correct one surprising rumor: Tacoma Power is not shutting down the hatcheries. We plan, in fact, to rebuild the salmon hatchery and enhance the trout hatchery so they produce healthier, higher quality fish that have a much-improved chance of survival".
This is in stark contrast to what Mark said at the meeting and what the FHMP states. The FHMP clearly states that the Sea Run Cutthroat fishery will be dismantled.
Is Debbie speaking out both sides of her mouth?
Furthermore, attendance to either meeting is limited to 25 people.
Shame on Tacoma P&L for holding a meeting in the middle of an afternoon during a weekday. What a crock!
Cowlitz Fisherman, do you have any more info?

Twig, Yeah, I got the notice of followup mtg yesterday. I think having a mtg in the afternoon one day & another in the evening (altho' 2 days later) was an attempt to give folks with different schedules a chance to attend. But then limiting the # of attendees to each mtg to 25 is a CROCK. Weekdays, weekends - they can't please everyone. Not that I'm trying to defend TPU - I think they should have 4 mtgs - 1 in afternoon on a weekday, another in the evening on a weekday, then an afternoon & evening mtg on a weekend day. I mean, it's NOT like they aren't making enough $$$ off the damn dams to pay for these meetings. And I think that EVERYONE should deluge them with registrations & if they refuse to allow more than 25 to attend, then deluge WDFW & FERC with followups that the publ;ic is being excluded from the process. I will definitely be at one of the 2 mtgs but need to coordinate with others to see which is best for them.

Unfortunately I will be out of town during the dates of the meeting.
CFM, have you contacted the media at all? What about contacting Jennie@IFish.net? What else can we do to pressure Tacoma P&L? How do we keep the hatcheries alive with SRC's, Summer and Winter Steelhead, Coho, Chinook?

Twig The word I am hearing is that no one wants to show up and hear Mark blabber off more of the same. They want the members of the FTC to show up i.e. NMFS, TU, AM, USFWS, WDFW, and WDOE to be there to tell them how they are going to pull this BS off! It's kind of like most federal and state agencies; they do their very, very best behind closed doors where they don't have to look you in the eye when they put the screws to us. They listen sometimes, it usually takes your attorney, or people like Congress Baird, to get their real attention. You saw that the "TU" representative showed up at Tacoma's "love in" on the 5th, but you also noticed that once the heat was turned up he didn't stick around very long either. In fact, he headed out when we called the "forces" together. ...I wonder why? Cowlitzfisherman

Good News Well I guess our meeting with the Congressmen Brian Baird paid off! For those of you that didn't get the time or opportunity to make your comments on the new draft Cowlitz River Fisheries Management Plan (FHMP) you will now get one more chance to do so! I just received this email from Tacoma Power: "Given the high level of interest and number of requests to extend the public comment period for the Fisheries and Hatchery Management Plan, Tacoma Power has now extended the deadline for comments to March 17, 2004. The final plan is scheduled to be submitted to FERC no later than April, 19, 2004. Thomas E.
