I will be going to the florida keys at the end of June and was thinking of doing a little Tarpon fishing. Has anyone out there been down there fishing for these critters? Or could they point me to a good guide. I would like to hear from someone who has been there and done it.

Thanks in advance.

I am heading down myself mid may. Contact Jack Backus at www.fishme.com. He is a good live bait tarpon guide based out of Bud and mary's marina in Islamorada. I would make arraingments fast or you may be out of luck. These guys book up 6 months or more in advance.

Make sure you get a guide that will work with you and fish the way you want to.
We went to the keys for a trip after I graduated highschool and it was frustrating to say the least. More me, i wanted to go after the fish and be agressive, the guide wanted to sit on points and wait for schools to come by. Very boring if there arent any fish.
Ended up hooking about an 80 pound fish (fly fishing) and busted it off on a coral head. Still a great feeling to hook something that big though. Only landed 2 fish in 3 days and they were both Permit.
Have fun.
