You guys gotta keep your eyes peeled on the new line of Chuck N Duck rods that Cabelas is coming out with. They are basically a 7, 8, or nine weight, 9 foot fly rod blank built with a couple different fightning butts that allow you to run a fly reel with mono for chuckin and duckin on smaller rivers for steelies and salmon. With the addtion of the longer butt and a spinning reel, you have a float fishing rod to run bait, jigs, or cast light spoons or spinners. The guys in the Midwest have been using them for decades, and they are versatile as hell. They can be used to slip bobber fish rough fish such as walleyes, pike or bass.

A buddy and I worked with Cabelas over the past year to develop the rods and I think the guys that give them a shot will be very happy with the versatility. They didn't want to come out with the rods until they were sure that they were right. If you need a lesson on Chuckin and Duckin, all you have to do is invite Basil and I out west to fish one of your favorite zipper lips, and we'll throw in the lessons for free. Don't take the rump whippin personally. Just ask Robbo, I had him tied up in knots on a little Alaskan coastal stream chuckin and duckin steelies. Don't worry we'll pay for gas, chips, and road chow.

Peace

Did you type that correctly? I have never heard of such a thing.

Cabelas has had some interesting stuff in their catalogs recently. Has anyone seen/used this?

One of my fishing buddies bought one this fall for the salmon runs. It is bigger in diameter than most graphite rods and they look like an eyeless glass rod only matte black. It doesn't cast as well as my rod I think because there is more friction. I would only use it for mooching or something like that. I can see some science behind it as far as parabolics are concerned but what you gain in parabolics you more than loose in friction and to be truthful, ugliness because they are bulky looking.

Yep lead thrower, I said a fly reel with mono. It is a system that is absolutely dynamite for metering line to drift fish through snaggy water. It's been used in the Great Lakes for 40 years or more. The reel of choice is a Martin 72 multiplier. Most guys run 6 or 8 pound maxima on them. For salmon, they will move up to 10 or 12 pound. You can chuck your offering in to the exact same spot time and time agin with little to no effort after you practice a little bit. It saves on a ton of gear, and you are instantly on your drift.

Metalhead Ron: I think we are talking about something totally different as far as rods. We hadn't even approved the design until somewhere after Christmas. They wee just made a couple months ago. The eyes on the rods are similar to a spinning rod, as you can actually cast a small float and a 1/32 oz jig for 30 yards or more. A spoon or spinner flies like a bullet.

Hawk, You call it "Chuck and Duck" it is also called "Flip and Strip" either way it is a great way to fish small snaggy streams like the Samish where I learned. You can cover every inch of pocket, add a little line mending with it and it is a deadly system.

I saw a few guys up on the Russian river on the Kenai Penn. using fly rods with mono. I tried the same thing and youn can cast it fairly well with a little practice. I think this only works on smaller streams. We were basically drift fishing with flyrods. On the Russian it is really easy to get spooled fishing for Sockeye and mono is a lot cheaper than flyline. In fact I reeled in an entire length of flyline that someone had lost.

You got it lbjamin. It's custom made for smaller rivers and creeks. Especially where there are boat loads of bed rock, boulders, etc. It also shines in areas where there is a lot of wood and or brush that covers under cut banks. You can chuck it up in a hole the size of a baseball basically every time if you know what you are doing. It can be done on big water, but you wear out your arm stripping line back in to make your next drift.

The reason for the slower action in the rod, is to allow you to run lighter line for spooky fish in low water conditions. Your summer runs and our fish in Canada, Michigan, Ohio, Penn, and New York are prime examples. I had a couple gusy look at me liek I was a freak when I was chuckin and dcukin on the Cascade a couple years ago. My buddy and I put on a clinic. It was a hoot.

Yep Hawk we are talking about completely different rods. I was referring to the link that Yeti provided to the eyeless rods that the line passes directly through the center of the rod. I have heard of flip and strip and have a buddy that does some of it.
