My in-laws live in Forks and we went to visit this weekend. I took my father in-law, Walt to fish for blackmouth at Sekiu.
We launched at Olson’s at 6:30am and ran to Kydaka Point to start our troll east towards the Caves. 5 minutes after I put my line down I get a fish on. Its small, about 24 inch so I let it go. 10 minutes later I get another fish on, this one feels a little bigger then the last one but not much. I tell Walt not to bother with the net because the fish does not feel very big. I get it close to the surface and then it takes off! It makes 2 or 3 long runs before I can get it close to the boat. When I get the fish close enough to see it I tell Walt that maybe he should get the net ready. We get the fish in the boat and it weighs 14lbs.
We set our gear back down and about 15 minutes later Walt gets a hit. He has the fish on for a few seconds and then it gets off. Next it was my turn again. I get another fish on and we get it to the boat. It was about 8-10lbs and I let it go. A little later Walt gets a hit and again loses the fish. We get past the Caves and turn around to troll back to Kydaka Point again. We trolled from the Caves west to Kydaka Point without getting any bites. We decided to run to Pillar Point. The wind had started to pick up enough to make white caps and was blowing from the east so it made a long and rough ride to Pillar Point.
We get to Pillar Point and turn around to start trolling west towards Slip Point. Right after I get my line down I get a huge hit, it almost took my rod tip to the water. I grab my rod and reel up the slack and there’s no fish, just the pull of the flasher and lure. Somehow the fish did not get hooked. 10 minutes later Walt gets a hit, again he misses it. About mid-way between Pillar and Slip Points Walt gets another hit, this time the fish stays hooked. He gets the fish to the boat and it is not a salmon, it is a small ling cod about 15 inches. By now I’m wondering if Walt is ever going to get a salmon to the boat today. 5 minutes later Walt gets another hit. He says it feels like a good size fish. He gets it to the boat and we get it in and it weighs 8lbs.
We both used flashers with coyote spoons. Walt had a Army truck color and I had a Green Spatterback color spoons. Had 125-150 feet of cable out in about 160-180 feet of water.
It was a fun day at Sekiu. I’ll be back there for the Derby on April 3-4.
