i have several spinners that needs new hooks or i just want to switch to single hooks. will split rings be ok to attach to the spinner and will they affect the motion of the spinner. the hook that are currently on the spinners, are directly attached to the wire.
thanks

This is very easy to do just simply clip the old hooks off. Put on some siwash hooks sized to fit your spinner on the wire where the old hook was and clamp down the eye of the siwash.

I like to attach my hook solid to my spinner. I like to slide the tubing over the hook and the spinners so the hook is held straight out. .....Ross

Adding a split ring or two is a good idea for some of the more popular commercially made spinners (Mepps, Vibrax). It really helps to get the hook point back away from the trailing edge of the spinner blade. If you carefully examine the path of rotation, you'll find that the blade serves as a deflector, shielding the stock hook point from connecting with the fish's mouth... especially when you are using a single hook. Yeah, another missed bite!
I have seen some guys go so far as using a bead chain to extend the hook back, but I think that is probably overkill.

Cut off the old hook....add split ring, then new hook...If casting or anchor fishing..current should hold hook where it should be....not to worry. If you want you can use tubing to hold it out straight like Fishhawg even with a split ring....(his pic looks like he has one) Mine..i don't and if the hook get's messed up i'll just rebuild it. The blue bead Clamshell is good for Fall Chinook Louis F.

cool lookin spinners... In my opinion, chromeo has it down.... go with a siwash over a treble hook on a spinner.. and i would disagree with owner cutting point trebles especially. i have seen more lost fish on those hooks than any other. the cutting points make too large of a hole as it penitrates the fish mouth and can come back out of that gaping hole too easilly, barb and all.. just my .02

May I slide in and hijack the thread for a quick question please, since we have spinner experts here,
What colors and size would you guys use on the springs up in the B.C, Fishery that is comeing, I have piles of blades left over from the Tillamook and the Nehalem days. If I recall without digging for them right now they are very similiar to what Louis Posted, any thoughts on the subject???
Thnx Bud.

Also if the fish is hooked with a barbless hook then, wont it back out also because there is no barb? If that is the case you did not have steady presure on the fish. just my I would put the owner cutting points against any other hook......Ross

I forgot about these but this is probably what these hooks were designed for. I have a package of VMC trebles that are called open shank. The third hook is brazed on but there is no braze between the two hooks made from a single piece of wire. Consequently you can simply cut the old hook off and slide the new hook in place, without the use of a split-ring.

I'd go with a sturdy split ring, and a 1/0 Siwash for sizes 4 and 5 french bladed spinners (or spoons for that matter).
The split ring gives the rig another joint on which to pivot and when a fish shakes its head or does the Coho twirl, the extra joint is good to ensure that the hook stays home. Pinching the barb down on a VMC size 1/0 Siwash in dark bronze works well for deeper penetration on hooksets as well. Gami's are sharper out of the box, but VMC's bend off of rocks better, bend back readily, and sharpen up nicely.
I'd ditch the trebles and go single barbless with a split ring. Anecdotal (non-peer-reviewed) evidence in my hands suggests I have a higher rate of beaching fish with barbless than with barbs. They are easier to pull out of your partner's scalp and ears as well.
Hope that all helps, and I'd welcome anybody else's suggestions too.

to solve ur problem, no is the answer, a split ring won't hurt a bit, but it all comes down to opinions! Chromeo, u do it the way i would though, don't ever have a problem with that rig, but i do like the open eye clamp down siwash gami's too! oh, by the way Chromeo, this is CastawayChris from marty's site! Gotta go along with Chromeo. But I do like the color combination of those spinners, may have to modify some to fit the rivers I fish.

the spinners in question are a dozen luhr jenson salmon/steelhead spinners. they are an old style spinner and the end of the wire is fed the eye of the hook and attatched to one of the trebles. i would like to change half of them to siwash hooks, but there is a bend where the wire is attatched to the treble. should i attempt the same follow through or straighten the wire?
