I was told by a gammi that a man was caught at the edmonds sling with 1800 shrimp in his boat. as some pointed out to me that is 225 limits. I dont think his math was off that much and i doubt he was going to eat it all him self. This was a guy who was going to try and get rich selling shrimp some where. I hope they throw the book at him and it is a really heavy book.

This same scenario played out last season in Edmonds. The fine if I remember right is $30 per shrimp over the limit. Confiscation of gear and boat is also typical. I know last season the dept. used the poaching incident to close the season early citing the huge poaching take as a deciding factor. I don't really know what happened to the guy who got busted last year after going to court but maybe we can do some research and find out. I know of huge ove rlimit incidents in Hood Canal by land owners who do not recognize the WDFW enforcement. Others who have said they will catch as many as they can because the indians can do that ....why can't I?

Ooops, Tom, I posted the 225 number --- I should have read my calculator more carefully.. It was 22.5 limits. (what a difference a decimal point makes) ;\)

The idiot who got busted last year came into our shop a few months ago. He expplained it as a protest against the inequallity the sport fishers get Vs. tribal and non tribal comercial harvist. He knew he would get busted and was prepaired to deal with the fines. He was pretty well off. I got the feeling he was one of these short sighted gimme gimme kinda guys. All he did was piss off the other shrimpers and cost us sales in equipment due to the premature closure.

New information from WDFW....enforcement agent Kim Chandler, well known to North end fishers, busted 4 poachers at the Edmonds marina in the private covered moorage area with over 1800 shrimp or about 450 each. The bail was $700 each. The poachers were caught during routine enforcement checks. What is not routine , however, is that Kim checked people on the private docks which are locked off to the general public and have for years provided a safe haven for those who choose to retain more than their limits.

Apparently an emphasis patrol contacted 350 shrimpers and made 35 arrests. That would be a 10% infraction percentage which is sad.

I know some of the folks out there believe that since the indians get to catch as many as they want I should be able to do the same and I am going to no matter what the laws say.....Well I am a big critic of the harvest and reporting policies of the tribes but I nver advocate trying to protest their bad behavior with like bad behavior. The fishing laws are complicated and seem unfair but we all must obey them if we ever want to make progress in improving sports fishing.

Thanks to WDFW and agent Chandler for weeding out some of the dishonest fishers.

Sorry to disagree G'Pa, but BS.... Since when have our "gives" or sacrifices, or obeying the law gotten us shiot?
I am to the point anymore where I don't give a damn. If they would put half the effort into tribal enforcement as they do non-tribal, then maybe I would feel different. At the rate it's going the last few years, what the hell difference is busting these poachers going to make? Like if all poaching by non-tribals were to end tomorrow it would mean any good news for us.... Although I would not ever take that many shrimp (how many can one small family eat?), I am nearly to the point to going home and tkaing a limit of crab whether open or not. It sickens me that every time I go home (Everett), the crabbing is closed and I see them asswipes out there with all their pots in around the mouth of the Snohomish and over near Hat and Mukilteo.... Screw em.

MC...I am with you on the frustration part ...yesterday the tribes were out shrimping in Everett...I am pretty sure they will continue to do so for the summer. You will see a boat at the cock with shrimp for sale all summer...crab too..

One argument I have heard more than once is that due to the abuses by the tribes and the lopsided harvesting we are starting to see the new version of the old game: :cowboys and indians".....

support statewide gambling....
