Here’s a new hook that I am designing. This type of fishing will be known as “Hook & Release” or “HnR” for short. Due to the obvious benefits of HnR fishing, I’m really expecting this idea to take off. Some of the benefits are:

The fish can be safely released 100% of the time.
You will never have to handle a fish again.
You will never have to exhaust the fish.
Can be used with flies, spoons, spinners or bait, without having a negative impact on the fish.
Comes in all sizes, ranging from big saltwater hooks to small freshwater hooks.
Can be fished open so that you never actually hook the fish or closed for some HnR fishing.
Hooking mortality drops to almost zero.

Yes! That’s right. Now you can still get the thrill of hooking a fish without all the downsides of actually catching it. This new revolutionary hook uses a hinged design so that with one quick solid snap of your rod, the hinge will collapse, allowing the fish to swim free without actually ever being caught. That’s right my friends. No more 5% or even 10% hooking mortality! Now you too can fish with the peace of mind knowing that the same fish can now be safely hooked and released once, twice, three times or more!

Bruce,

Good on ya' lad, but I have some hooks that already seem to function that way. Bought some Mustad dry fly salmon hooks years ago for fall steelhead fishing. I've never landed a fish on one of those flies, as the hook invariably opens up and safely releases the steelhead, saving me the hassle of actually playing the fish to near exhaustion and handling it to revive it. I didn't notice the little hinge on those hooks, but they must be there, cuz that's exactly how the darn things work.

Sincerely,

Salmo g.

Bruce,

Don't shoot the messenger! Although you've likely got glory enough to share, I'll pass if you don't mind. Blame Mustad. They're the ones who made those darn light-wire hinged hooks that cannot land a fish larger than a smolt.

"Fish for the grab" is kind of a catchy line tho, isn't it?

Sincerely,

Salmo g.
