I plan on targeting Ling cods on Saturday in Area 9.
My main line is Power Pro 30lb test.
Should I use same Power Pro 30lb test for leader material?
I'll be using squid for bait.
Appreciate your expert advise on this!

30lb UG is good. 40 is better...

I would advise on using something like a 150# test steel leader. I have used 40# before and had my jig stripped right off like I was using 6# test. Sometimes those lings can have really aggressive strikes.

I like to use a leader that is lighter than my main line. A lighter leader is good for when you hang up on the bottom. You can break it off with out loosing your sinker. I am referencing bottom fishing the Narrows with live bait.

Any suggestions for a terminal rig/set up that will allow me to fish/cast live bait off a pier or jetty? Specifically, a setup that will allow me to get the live bait away from the pier, without having to heave the bait (it either falls off the hook or dies from the concussion of hitting the water)?

Thanks for the advise Hohwaiian and Sky-Guy!
I think I'll be trying the steel leader first to make sure I don't farm a Ling or two. ;\)

What you do is you tie a big swivel onto your main line, and then run about 24" of lighter line down to your sinker. You cast this out and wait for it to get to the bottom. After drawing it up tight, attach the bait via a hook that's attached to a snap swivel that's smaller than the diameter of the swivel near the sinker (the wire ones that you can open completely work best), and put on a smaller (like 1/2 - 1 oz max) and clip it to the line. Slide the bait down to the water, and wait for it to sink down to the swivel. Bingo.

Cheapskate, I have seen the guys at the local pier use ballons. They have the set up rigged up like bobber fishing but have the leader slide down the line via swival. Also don't use any weight. Then they tie a ballon on to the main line(sliding again) then toss out. Let the wind/tide take the ballon and the bait below.

I buy a small spool of plastic coated wire leader 55# for $4.00 and metal crimps for 3cents at englund marine. simply run wire through crimp and back to form loop crimp down and do the same to the other side but add hook, there teeth will not cut wire.

Mostly when I fish for lings I fish jigs and strongly believe in using a short wire leader on my mainline. Those sharp teeth can severe mono really quick. Another option is to use a 40lb test mono shock leader between your jig and mainline. I usually go with with about the 20-30 inch leader if using mono.
