This quote just boggles my mind:

"The recreational fishing industry generates $600 million (US$438 million) in economic activity a year, while the commercial side takes 80 percent of the catch and produces about $42 million (US$30.1 million) in landed value, he said."

Salmon are forever screwed until the days of "cheap fish at Safeway" are a thing of the past.

This is another very sad quote:

"John said any government proposal for quotas would be viewed by Indians with skepticism "mostly because it's left the aboriginal communities out of that system" in the past."

I'd better run this by Magic 8 Ball:

"Magic 8 Ball, will the salmon industry collapse up in Canada?"

"Signs Point to Yes."

Your right Parker, the answer does seem obvious with the math.. but as we all well know, math means nothing when your talking about fish.

Sounds like the fishing "industry" earning $600 million Canadian per year is doing just fine.

Article said that endangered species protections were one factor in the collapse. Maybe it is time the Canadians follow our lead and reclassify the salmon to make them abundant again.

The 'math' is very interesting. The commercials get 80% of the available fish, but 'earn' well under 10% of what comes out of the 'sportsmans wallet.'

I hope commercial fishing ends in Canada, more fish for us in the Big C then. We do get screwed by the commercial fishing treaties between our 2 countries.

Let all of the commercials go bankrupt, down here too. People that want to eat fish should catch it themselves, or buy farm raised just like when you want to eat duck...

"The report warns that these problems have collectively brought the commercial salmon industry to the brink of bankruptcy."

And this is a bad thing how?

WRO,

We sportsmen in washington do get screwed by the treaties with canda the canadians catch a huge fraction of washington's harvestable chinook and coho.

However, the Washington and Alaska Commericials and tribal fishers benefit immensely. Washington netters get a big portion of the fraser sockeye and the alaskans harvest a bunch of the canadian chinook.

We sportsmen get nothing out of the deal.

Those of you intersted in changing allocations should focus on this issue. Lets let the canadian keep all their sockeye and we'll keep all our washington reared chinook and coho.

It would be nice, but somebody (maybe RFA?) is going to need to step up and learn how to play politics like the big boys if it is to ever come to pass.

The federal and provincial govts of British columbia and Canada are trying their best to kill off the sportsfishing industry .It is getting in the way of their aquaculture interests. If you have been following the story ,the fish travelling past the fish farms are being infested with sea lice and to all smolts this is fatal.
In Vancouver ,there was just a meeting of the worlds leading experts on oceans and our minister of fisheries didn't even show up.
The latest abomination is that they will be splitting up fish allocations 3 ways ,with commercial ,sportfishing interests and natives each getting a equal share ,although sportfishing and it's spinoffs pour huge dollars back into the economy and the other 2 interests, well, you know.

the deal with this report is to give all three (sport, commercial & first nations) a quota. This way when we do our treaty settlements with all the first nations, Quota can be purchased from the commercials to give to the first nations. Then when the sport fishermen reach their quota, they have to purchase it from commercials or first nations to be able to keep fishing. This report has nothing to do with making commercial or sport fishing an economically viable business, but giving all the fish away in treaty negotiations to first nations. At least the Boldt decision gives only half of the salmon/steelhead away, our goverment in canada is set to give it all away here so there is no sport or commercial fishing.
