This is my opinion, flame me for it if you like. This is prompted by the posts I've seen here saying 'Go take your boat out to the reef around *dock of your choice*."

The best way to fish from a boat around the piers (Edmonds, Des Moines, take your pick) is not to fish there at all. People in boats can go all over the water. People on piers are confined to the dock. It sucks big time when you're fishing on the pier for bottomfish and some a-hole in a boat is hanging just beyond casting distance trying for the same fish. Last year I almost beaned someone in a boat with a 5" Buzz Bomb. What did they buy the damn boat for? Ya got a boat, use it to go fish the water that the dock people can't get to, and leave the dock fish alone.

Again, just my opinion.

I agree. I fish from pier and boat and as long as they are following the rules I have no problem.

Then if there is no one fishing from the pier them I don't see a problem being close.

what pier were you at Arklier ?

I also agree and I'd have to say so does WDFW. You cannot fish within 100yds of DesMoines, Les Davis or Redondo unless you are fishing from the piers. Edmonds is defined a little differently but the idea is the same.

I dont know of the original posts that you are speaking of but maybe they didnt mean a public fishing pier.

I was at Des Moines. Some yo-yo was fishing on the inside of the bouey, and a stray cast almost clocked him one.

I would do the same. First try to inform him that he is not allowed to fish within 100 yards of the pier, and if that doesnt work, call it in. If he gets threatening, call 911.

And on the flip side, it annoys the piss out of me when people fish and crab off the piers at a boat launch. I launch at Mukilteo, and it's bad enough watching out for the unattended children diving off the pier, the guy thowing a stick into the ramp area for his dog to fetch and the elderly people feeding the pigeons in the trailer backing area, but I've also got to watch for some guy who gets pissy when my prop breaks off the buzz bomb that he decided to cast right in front of my moving boat. Guy had the cojones to demand five bucks from me, too. The guys with the crab rings are great, they heave the ring right into the center of the lane, as if the crabs are any different 15 feet to the side than straight down. I'ts like running a gauntlet some days. Luckily, when the city took over managing the ramp from the state, they put up "No Fishing" signs there.. seems to have deterred about 80% of the folks. I really don't understand... there are 2 (well, one of them was damaged last october, so temporarily only one) dedicated fishing piers not 200 yards from the ramp, in calmer deeper water to boot, and they will be empty while the boat piers are packed.

I get POed whenever people are where they're not supposed to be. Yes, fishing off the boat launch is just as dumb. Maybe I should buy a megaphone and take it along to yell at people out on the boats.

Believe it or not, I've seen worse. Once when I was out there a few years ago, a guy must have been fishing for whales, since he had like 80 pound test dacron line on. An a-hole in a boat ran over his line, so he just flipped the bail, let it spool out for a bit, and then cut the line. About 10 minutes later there was a cloud of black smoke coming up from the marina. Guess Mr. Genius Boater learned the hard way.

I have a boat but I also like to fish from the piers. I also get p'oed when for some evidently unexplainable reason one of the first places someone new to the boat fishing world has to find a public fishing pier to fish by! They got The whole damn lake or sound but they gots to anchor right in front of bank fishermen.
And Yes casting your rod with the old line on it in front of one of these yahoos does work to bind up there prop about 50% of the time. casting 4 ounce sinkers repeatedly around them also will do the job most the time. I also hate it when people moore ther boats within casting distance of a public pier. 4 ounce sinkers cast directly onto those boats works really good for getting them removed. People that do these stupid things might as well be just plain flat out telling me to f-off because they evidently dont give a hoot about anybody but themselves. The only thing that makes me even madder is th weekend warriors that ask the idiot boaters if there catching anything while there screwing up the fishing!

There was guy at the long lake pier that showed up with a remote control boat and proceeded to run it around 6 or 7 peoples lines while they were fishing. Nobody said anything to the moron at all. Three people actually moved out of his way! I held off on long as posible because I was leaving for work in five minutes anyways. I couldnt stand it any longer and told him in so many words to go somewhere else and he did. Whats wrong with people, too much TV? Nobody speaks up anymore! Are the afraid they'll get sued for verbal abuse or something? Another recent case was some morons in a big bayliner at long lake. I pulled up to the pier and they were anchored 20 feet off the pier. There were two others fishing and they were saying nothing to get the morons outa there!

People ya gots to let them know what there doing is unacceptable!

Micro I agree let them know by yelling. But as for casting at them, I disagree. Those who know me will recall that I spent the weekend in jail over such an incident ten years ago. Just imagine a raging king bite going on and some doughballs from out of town, for whatever reason, in front of the pier. I didn't think I'd hookup with someone's arm when I casted my Buzz Bomb. Ultimately, I got charged with assault using a deadly weapon. Long story short; I learned my lesson and try to discourage others from casting at boaters, divers, kayakers, etc. whenever they get too close to the piers. If 4-oz of lead hit someone in the head it would kill him/her.
