Halibut will close on Thursday the 20th at midnight for areas 3 and 4 for those of you who had planned on coming for the weekend. The quota was at around 55000 lbs so I gues they thought they would reach it by Thursday night.

Well, after Thursday I believe you will have the
following situation:

Region.............. Ore.............Wa ............Canada

Halibut..............open.........closed.........open
Chi Salmon...... open........closed ........ open

To me it seems like the biology factor applied depends very much on where the state line is drawn. Do the fish know that??

I am working the same problem. I heard there is a hardware store in Lynden where you can get them without going across the border. That sounded interesting. Otherwise you can go to Blaine or supposedly take the walk-on ferry from Pt Angeles to Victoria then jet over to a place called Robinson's Sporting Goods whcih is near-by. I am thinking about doing that.

the online thing would be great but they have been working on it for two years and it ain't there yet and maybe never will be.

Take the truck border crossing in Blaine, about 3/4 miiles on your right is the Campbell River Country Store.

What Jerry said.

Just did that last week. Drove thru the truck crossing & about a 1/2 mile across the border on the right hand side at the first traffic light is the Cambell River Store.

You need your drivers license -don't forget it.

You are supposed to show up in person to get your fishing license. It was $6 American for one day.

Good Luck!

Area 2 is still going to be open out of Westport. The charters out of Lapush are trying to get it to where you can fish area two and come back to Lapush. there is a few spots the westport charters run up to about 27 miles southwest of Lapush. It is about 47 from westport. Why not move the line down a little and give us more quota out here. Been out everyday almost. Biggest was 108 on wednesday and nothing less than 40. Just a shame they cut us off so early. You cant get licenses online yet. Have to go to canada to get one. They will be availbable next year online.

What I cannot figure out is how fish and game makes it look like they have everything figured out to the exact pounds for the quota allotments and then when we go out of Lapush there is no fish checker most of the time. Several people I talked with were not checked and apparently there wasn't a checker on the docks when most of the boats were coming in on at least three days . Pretty hard to figure out their system and how it works. Eight days sucks!!

You stole the words right out of my mouth sealice. We fished on the 11th and 12th and today and only seen the checker one day. ONE FREAKING DAY out of 3. How in the heck do they know if the quoata is met. They said the fish have been bigger than expected. I must be blind cause most of what I saw were 20-30 pounders. Didn't see a lot of big fish.

I guess we can look forward to our 1 day june season. We'll probably reach the quota before we leave the dock.

WDFW data collection and analysis is a great mystery to all of us. Why can't they explain it to us? Why can't they devote a page on their web-site to the subject.

What they probably do is sample over a period of time and then multiply by some factor to account for the time they are not there. There can be hazards to doing this. If the fish checker shows up during prime time and logs 100 fish in 2 hours, and then multiplies by 8 to account for the time he was not there then you may have bogus data. But the process is never explained to us, so we do not know one way or the other.

My own pet peeve is the 350,000 fish escapment "rule" for Lake Wa sockeye. I have issues with this number (issues which I believe are based on sound principles), but I can never get them to talk about it.

I think we should ask them to hold a workshop or something and show us how they get from A to Z, beginning with the raw data.

This same thing goes for the punch card data. We are severly admonished to send in our cards, but we never hear about the data. What's up with that??
