I have just spooled up my halibut rigs with braided line. I was told by a friend that I should not use the same old knot, the fishermans knot, that I have used for so many years. He said that when this knot tightens that it will cut itself.
What would the proper knot be?

A fellow showed me that Palomar knot earlier this year...and I have been very pleased with it since.

Easy to tie, super strong.

Be sure to run a leader that is lighter than the main line. Then, if you have to bust off, the only loss will be the leader, probably at the lower knot. You'll keep most of your terminal tackle that way and save time re-tying.

Double improved clinch is the strongest knot I've used for braided line.

Polomar, it should be noted that this is one of the only, 100 % strenghth, and no slip knots. Which says, it will not break itself, if somethings gonns bust, it's not going to be the knot. Tight lines, FC.

With braided lines it's not just strenght, but with regular knots they slip and the tag in slides through, not shure if the polamar knot is the same as this one i use? but take the rivers inlet knot, but instead of pulling it tight and trimming the loop and tag end drop the hook or swival through the loop and then pull it tight and all you trim is the tag end, the knot will not break, just make sure to pull evenly and snug up all lines, doug

Doug is right on. Here is the knot he described, only tied in mono. Just like he said there is only one tag end sticking out when you are done, not three!

If you really want to make this knot bulletproof, tie a bimini loop in the end of your superbraid, then tie the improved rivers inlet knot with the looped end. The knot you form will be extremely clean with NO tag end whatsoever! You will NEVER have to retie that connection until you dump your braid. Your mono leader will always break first when you hang up (assuming of course that the braided mainline is heavier than the mono or fluoro leader.

I HAVE FOUND THAT IF YOU WET YOUR BRADED LINE BEFOR TIEING YOUR KNOT AND SLOWLY DRESS YOUR KNOT WHILE PULLING IT TIGHT ,YOU COME UP WITH A WAY STRONGER SYSTEM ( KNOT ) BESURE TO SINCH IT DOWN SLOWLY!!

I was not familiar with the rivers inlet knot, so I researched & came up with the braid knot. Could you tell me is this the same knot. cfl.rr.com

Yep... that's the same knot, Tex.

To make it better, just pass the swivel/hook back thru the terminal loop before snugging it tight.
