I can’t believe it someone ripped off my kicker motor. I had a motor lock on it and it was only 10 feet from my bedroom window. I just can’t believe I didn’t hear anything but it might be good that I didn’t with the gun beside the bed and 100 rounds ready to go I would have gotten myself in trouble. This motor only lasted a few months outside.

Here’s the info if you guys want to help keep an eye out for it. It’s 2002 8 horse mercury S/N OT544034 it’s a short shaft with a bay kit shaft extension kit on it. Stolen from Lynnwood 5/25/04.

Dang Hairball...sorry to hear about this.

Thieves suck.

Ever considered adding a motion alarm to your boat? Might not be too difficult a thing to do, and the next idiot that tries to rip you off will be staring down the barrel of your favorite baseball bat. Place the speaker just under the transom so when it goes off it's right in the dude's face..:-)

(Leave the shotgun inside with the wife, if needed).

Mike

That’s some good advice Mike B. The wife is getting shooting lessons. I got my own custom solid polyurethane bat. I am looking for advice on how to protect my new motor when I get it.

I just discovered on Saturday that someone tried to steal my kicker again. (I've already lost one to thieves) I was getting something out of the boat and noticed the fuel line was off the motor. Thought that was weird, and when looking closer noticed the wire for the remote throttle control was cut and the locking mechanism was broke. I guess breaking that lock made enough noise to scare them away.

I think I'm going to figure out a way to bolt the motor to the transom. It will take much longer and more work to unbolt.

Someone suggested that I weld the kicker to the boat. I haven't, but that would make it hard to get loose!

put a large steel plate on the ground under your motor. Wire the plate to 220v in your garage...set up a grounding system attached to your kicker that completes the circuit when someone is standing on the plate and touching the kicker...switch it on at night...You will most likely kill the thief and then you go to prison.....

Hairball, that sucks and I am sorry to hear it. My buddy lost his 8 horse Yamaha to a thief while the boat was at the marina. You are right on about the shotgun being left inside. If you shot the thief I can guarantee the thief's family would sue you for excessive force. It is real interesting how these worthless scum become saints and financial providers for all kinds of people once they are killed. Even if you prevail on the lawsuits, it will cost you tens of thousands in attorney's fees - not worth it for a motor.

I think any thing you do to secure the motor will eventually get defeated. I had a buddy I used to ski with. He took the ugliest wallpaper you could find and put it on his skis. His theory, no thief would rip off something with that ugly wallpaper and if ever stolen, who would buy them - too easy to ID and too ugly. He never lost those ugly skis.

I hope you get your motor back and if you didn't report it to the police do so, sometimes they get lucky.

That really sucks... I had one stolen a couple years ago.. the thing that really pissed me off was that it was not a fisherman who stole it I am sure.. some crank head no doubt. I decided the only way to keep it from happening again was to take the kicker off and put it in my garage between trips. It also had a lock on it. They just cut the lock mounts with bolt cutters. If they want it..they will get it. Best not to leave it out where they can see it. So many kickers get stolen, that its a gimmi that many if not most that are for sale used must be stolen.

I have never(knock on hardwood) had any problems with people taking things from my boat.but i have RV parking along side the house and a six foot fence on all sides. But most of my neighbors know that i will take the culprit by the horns, so to speak. Before the fence was completed, did have a guy run accross my property which i ran down and got ahold of, while walking him back to my house, the cops showed up and arrested him, Turns out he was an escaped felon trying to steal cars and split when the cops busted his cronies.Told him right off the bat, "If you get out of line with me, I'll throw you around like a rag doll"
Sure i was lucky, he did have a knife on him, but i was also armed, which he never saw.If anything would have gone down, my story would have been (self defense).

That truly sucks, Hairball! Oh well, that is what insurance and garage is for.

That is the current reason why I don't own a sled. I don't have a garage to put it in. I refuse to own a boat that can not be hidden away in a garage.

Who is buying these motors? I wouldn't support any business that dealt in blackmarket/stolen parts or motors.

dirty buggers! I have resorted to taking the kicker off and storing it in the garage. I bought one of those motor dollys and it works fine to wheel it to and from the boat. Good luck.

I have lost two motors in the past 10 years. I have 2000' of driveway that they have to drive down kind of suprising they had the sack to do it. I finally built an automatic gate this past winter. Not a normal gate but a piece of art reflective of my interest in hunting and fishing in the NW , It weighs over 10k lbs and would take a bull dozer to drive through. The local kids where out whaking mail boxes as they do every spring so I am working on a one ton mail box that looks like a normal mail box until they hit it with a bat. I let them have the first 9 or 10 mail boxes as a sacrifice for all the mail boxes I whacked in college.

I was told by the guy that sold me my kicker that the thieves always have bolt cutters. They never take the time to disconnect anything but the fuel line. So a cable or chain type lock is useless. Also, if the motor is security-bolted onto the bracket, they usually disconnect the bracket. Just make sure you have good insurance...

\:\( Have personally lost three kickers over the last 20 yrs. Managed to get one back only because I managed to get the license plate of the vehicle as it was driving off and they ( the lowlifes) knew it. Seems the driver had a rap sheet a mile long! They called a couple of days later and offered to return the motor if I dropped the charges. Told them no way and they returned the motor anyways. Any more if I buy anything used, I always run the serial #s past the local law enforcement. Was really glad to see Everett PD running serial #s down at the docks while they were doing safety checks!

Watch E-bay for a while. I have heard a lot of them end up for sale there. Maybe you can spot yours and pose as a buyer to find out the serial number etc.

That Sucks Hairball, sorry to hear this.
I live in Lynnwod by Swamp creek and recently had my trcuk broken into, my whole dashboard laying on my seat when I went out to go to ork the next morning. They ripped out a $300 Pioneer deck and alot of other misc. gear. This was a month ago.

When the Sheriff came out he said there has been alot of crime in Lynnwood lately.

Where do you live in Lynnwood?

One note about the home owners insurance paying for your kicker motor. They replaced mine but told me it was a one time deal. The next one is on me. I thought that was pretty odd but checked around and its pretty common practice for insurance companies.

Unless you have a rider for it. I have riders for actual replacement value on all of my sporting goods. ins policies usually have lifetime limts on certain items or named perils. So unless your boat and movable parts like outboards, detph finders etc. has a specific policy separate from your homeowners you ususally only have $2000 lifetime with a a $250 deduct.
