Dang Hairball...sorry to hear about this.
Thieves suck.
Ever considered adding a motion alarm to your boat? Might not be too difficult a thing to do, and the next idiot that tries to rip you off will be staring down the barrel of your favorite baseball bat. Place the speaker just under the transom so when it goes off it's right in the dude's face..:-)
(Leave the shotgun inside with the wife, if needed).

I just discovered on Saturday that someone tried to steal my kicker again. (I've already lost one to thieves) I was getting something out of the boat and noticed the fuel line was off the motor. Thought that was weird, and when looking closer noticed the wire for the remote throttle control was cut and the locking mechanism was broke. I guess breaking that lock made enough noise to scare them away.
I think I'm going to figure out a way to bolt the motor to the transom. It will take much longer and more work to unbolt.

Someone suggested that I weld the kicker to the boat. I haven't, but that would make it hard to get loose!

Hairball, that sucks and I am sorry to hear it. My buddy lost his 8 horse Yamaha to a thief while the boat was at the marina. You are right on about the shotgun being left inside. If you shot the thief I can guarantee the thief's family would sue you for excessive force. It is real interesting how these worthless scum become saints and financial providers for all kinds of people once they are killed. Even if you prevail on the lawsuits, it will cost you tens of thousands in attorney's fees - not worth it for a motor.
I think any thing you do to secure the motor will eventually get defeated. I had a buddy I used to ski with. He took the ugliest wallpaper you could find and put it on his skis. His theory, no thief would rip off something with that ugly wallpaper and if ever stolen, who would buy them - too easy to ID and too ugly. He never lost those ugly skis.
I hope you get your motor back and if you didn't report it to the police do so, sometimes they get lucky.

That really sucks... I had one stolen a couple years ago.. the thing that really pissed me off was that it was not a fisherman who stole it I am sure.. some crank head no doubt. I decided the only way to keep it from happening again was to take the kicker off and put it in my garage between trips. It also had a lock on it. They just cut the lock mounts with bolt cutters. If they want it..they will get it. Best not to leave it out where they can see it. So many kickers get stolen, that its a gimmi that many if not most that are for sale used must be stolen.

I have never(knock on hardwood) had any problems with people taking things from my boat.but i have RV parking along side the house and a six foot fence on all sides. But most of my neighbors know that i will take the culprit by the horns, so to speak. Before the fence was completed, did have a guy run accross my property which i ran down and got ahold of, while walking him back to my house, the cops showed up and arrested him, Turns out he was an escaped felon trying to steal cars and split when the cops busted his cronies.Told him right off the bat, "If you get out of line with me, I'll throw you around like a rag doll" Sure i was lucky, he did have a knife on him, but i was also armed, which he never saw.If anything would have gone down, my story would have been (self defense).

That truly sucks, Hairball! Oh well, that is what insurance and garage is for.
That is the current reason why I don't own a sled. I don't have a garage to put it in. I refuse to own a boat that can not be hidden away in a garage.
Who is buying these motors? I wouldn't support any business that dealt in blackmarket/stolen parts or motors.

dirty buggers! I have resorted to taking the kicker off and storing it in the garage. I bought one of those motor dollys and it works fine to wheel it to and from the boat. Good luck.

I have lost two motors in the past 10 years. I have 2000' of driveway that they have to drive down kind of suprising they had the sack to do it. I finally built an automatic gate this past winter. Not a normal gate but a piece of art reflective of my interest in hunting and fishing in the NW , It weighs over 10k lbs and would take a bull dozer to drive through. The local kids where out whaking mail boxes as they do every spring so I am working on a one ton mail box that looks like a normal mail box until they hit it with a bat. I let them have the first 9 or 10 mail boxes as a sacrifice for all the mail boxes I whacked in college.

Watch E-bay for a while. I have heard a lot of them end up for sale there. Maybe you can spot yours and pose as a buyer to find out the serial number etc.

That Sucks Hairball, sorry to hear this. I live in Lynnwod by Swamp creek and recently had my trcuk broken into, my whole dashboard laying on my seat when I went out to go to ork the next morning. They ripped out a $300 Pioneer deck and alot of other misc. gear. This was a month ago.
When the Sheriff came out he said there has been alot of crime in Lynnwood lately.
Where do you live in Lynnwood?

One note about the home owners insurance paying for your kicker motor. They replaced mine but told me it was a one time deal. The next one is on me. I thought that was pretty odd but checked around and its pretty common practice for insurance companies.

Unless you have a rider for it. I have riders for actual replacement value on all of my sporting goods. ins policies usually have lifetime limts on certain items or named perils. So unless your boat and movable parts like outboards, detph finders etc. has a specific policy separate from your homeowners you ususally only have $2000 lifetime with a a $250 deduct.

good mail box story.. a old guy that lived across from my own first place was on the point of where two roads came togather. that fall just as school was starting back up his mail box was getting ran over about twice a week. after the second week i saw and regconized the little scum balls , they where a year behind me and in my little brothers class. I gave the info to the old man so he could call the cops. he suprised me when he told me to keep the info and not let the punks find out we know who they where. I asked why and he said becouse the trap was almost set and closed the door. i was stunned. they had hit his box about four times.and every time he would put the box back up on a even flimsier peice of wood then the last time ,making it easier to knock down. that sunday just before dark i spy the old man out in the yard with a wheel barrel, shovel ,and a steel pipe. the wheel barrel was full of concrete and he had a twinkle in his eyes. I walked over picked up a shovel and helped him set a 3 in steel pipe filled with cement in to a 4 ft deep hole also filled with cement. we covered the pipe with a hollowed out 4x4 with the box attached to the top. I never said anything to him or him to me the whole time. but as he turned to put his tools away he said "see you at 630, the time that box usally got hit. I set my alarm for 6am. i brought a camp chair over to his front step and he broght the coffe. 6 27 am the truck made contact and riped the drivers side wheel and tire ,along with parts of the front bumper, and fender, off the truck. 71 chevy. Dads 71 chevy. Iam sorry , officer daddys 71 chevy. the truck traveled across the road and in to and thru a split rail fence in to the yard of mother of local judge. the boys lived but they payed for a long time. I always use fairness with caution when dealing with old men that still have that twinkle in their eyes. they have lived in harder times then i every will and know how to deal with poeple in thier own special way.

I knew a guy that kept having his mailbox hit so he made a big one up with 4 or 5 slots in it for all his neighbors out of 1/4" steel. Set it on a pipe which sat in about 2 wheelbarrows of cement. That lasted until someone wanted to test out their new winch late one night. So the next time he borrowed a back hoe from someone he knew and dug as deep as he could then called the cement truck up. When he was done he proudly stated that it would take a D8 cat to pull it out now. 25 years later it's still there. I know of someone else recently who was having the same problem. He went and bought the biggest box you can buy. Took it to work and had it lined with a rolled piece of 1/4" steel. They're up late one night watching TV and hear a "DONG" go our the next morning and there's a really small ding in the outer box and a couple pieces of aluminum baseball bat in the road. No one else has ever tried to get it, although somebody had a wide canopy or camper and clipped it once. Ripped the door off the front and left fiberglass all over the road.

Thats what I am doing. Putting a piece of heavy pipe in a big tin mail box.
We used to take off from Pullman on long fishing trips while in college. We would load up the floor boards with big round rocks about half the size of a bowling ball. We would bomb down the highway and hold the rocks out the window and just drop them into a mail box at 90mph. The boxes would just dissapear leaving the post intact. One time we got pulled over for speeding. The sheriif wanted to know why we had all these rocks in the car. We made up some story about using them camping. He asked us if we knew antything about mailboxes being stolen in the area?
