I got a kick out of crabbing in Westport, but don't have time to get up there again just yet. I read you can crab at Dash Point but have been also told not to eat them. Are they that bad, and if so, where would be a good place to crab closer than Westport. No boat, just crab snares and net.

"What nots?" Did you say "what nots?" Parker says that is the hot ticket for springers... and they come from crab??? The secret is out!

Well, we went to the Key Peninsula as I wanted to clam first then crab off the dock. The clamming was poor for everyone I saw. My boyfriend yelled that a horse clam squirted him but got away. I dug into the hole and spent the next hour clawing through the rocks for this clam. Several people came over to watch me hunched over head first into the water filled hole. An asian lady finally jumped in to direct. I had his neck just couldn't get him to budge. She bucketed out water and sand so I could try to get the shell. Anyhow, after a very sweaty, salty, and gritty hour, the clam was out. I thought it must be a gooey, but it was just a huge horse clam. so, now it was getting to be time to crab. We only had seen small ones caught, just a few legal so I put some hooks and bait on a line. Caught a very cute bottom fish that went back in and some crabs. No legal crabs and the wind was smashing the waves in at the end. Fun day, but Westport produced much more. Let me know if anyone is doing good on the clams or crabs around here, even the boat pots looked empty today.

Crab[ng is slow in the daytime right now. I have got my limit on overnigt sets. They are digging in because of the big tides wade the sallows on the out tide and look for football shaped bumps in the sand.

River, thanks for the advice. I will indeed try for the football lumps today. I waded out barefoot last time to look at the baby crabs and fish. They were pretty interesting until I saw the spider crabs all closing in on me. Glad I didn't step on a big one. I'm set to wade out for the big crabs, have a great smelly mixture for the dock crabbing and some clam necks and squid for the fishing pole. Should be a good day.
