Hawgs in your back yard? Only if you work in downtown Anchorage, AK. Check out this 60# fire engine caught out of Ship Creek the other day:

Is that a salmon or a huge goldfish?

My old boss cought one just like that in the Kenai.....his guide told him that kings are that color because they spend much of their life under the polor ice.

That guide probably spends most of his life under a cloud of THC, or perhaps a "polar ice"-chilled bottle of Yukon Jack.

I've seen them fish Ship Creek before, my money says snagged, what says you physician? No offense if this is a friend of yours, I'm sure some fish are legitimately caught, just many aren't.

If I were a betting man, I'd have to agree with you FC. It didn't say what the guy was using for "bait" in the ADN article, but odds are better than 90% that fish was "flipped and ripped."

Maybe someone out there knows for sure.... wouldn't want to start a vicious rumor.

The more I look at it, are those pitch fork holes in its back? Who needs snagging gear?

Not sure if it still is this way but last time I was In Alaska the residents could snag and net fish in some rivers. I saw them with landing nets just standing in the river catching fish....Not the same conditions as down here and many riveers have excess fish so why not?

I'll tell you one thing. I wouldn't care if the damn thing was purple, As long as it was legally hooked, I'd be all over fighting one like that. If you think that one looks nasty, just wait till the fall and I'll post a few pics of the kings that the drones drag up the banks in Wisconsin. All you need is crackers, because they have multiple "dipping" pools all over their body.

I guess that's the sushi version of "salmon dip".

Hawk, That's gross! But it does remind me of the guy in the Jerkley fishing line ad in STS. He's holding a fish up by the gills and I'm amazed the meat isn't slidding off the bones! Anyone remember that one?

That king is a chromer compared to some of the fish I've seen caught and kept on the KP. I was at the Russian in August one day and saw a guy walking out with 2 of the reddest greenhead sockeye you can imagine. These puppies didn't need the wood shampoo, they died from the fishing line hitting them in the head they were so weak. I had to watch him fillet them out of morbid curiosity. Sure enough, meat that I wouldn't have fed to my roses...

If you want to see some thing just as gross, There is a new book I think is called " drift fishing secrets". It is filled with pictures of fish from Barier dam. Half way thru the book shows the author with a "beutifull" king. This is one of the moldiest, nasty looking springers I have ever seen. More than likely caught in October. I've caught more than my fair share of boots on the Vedder but never as nasty as this one. EWWWWWWW But as the Sammish snaging club's motto say's " at least it'll smoke up nice" ;\)

They fly fish in Alaska for those kings. They use a pattern called the Silver Spider. It looks like a large treble hook. You don't use trad fly gear just some real heavy mono or braid and a weight ;\)

That fish cut fine, fish in the KP area turn earlier because of the high FW content in cook inlet and many fish pop in and out of FW on their way in. As for whether it was flipped and ripped, who knows but alot of those fish don't bite well because of the immense pressure on a small stream. Not condoning snagging, but if they are atleast getting them in the mouth its better than 90% of the yahoos down there. As for me, you'll never see me there.
