Trolled from Dolphin down to point Beals this morning - 7:15 to about 8:30. Lost one that really took the line, and then landed a 15# king. I love being out there solo, but it get's crazy when it comes time to get one in the net. Both fish hit my green/glow hotspot, green hootchie with herring strip. 90' down in 120' of water. The one I landed was caught all the way down at point Beals.

I didn't come across any concentrations of bait. Everything still seems to be spread out - but they are out there! Feels good to get the first of the season.

I'll try and post a pic tonight.

How deep were you fishing at Southworth. Suspended or on the bottom? I was there earlier in the week and saw several boated but non on mine.

I like to fish the high tide change or middle of flood tide. If the tide change is modest I fish to north of the point in 140 - 160 ft. If the tide is moving 10 ft plus I will fish directly at the point and move north and south. I have been catching all fish near the bottom. Two kings last week came at 225 ft on the downrigger. It surprises me all the boats have been fishing the south side of the point. I have fished Southworth for 20 years and most of my fish come on the north side, sometimes as for down as Harper pier.

Nice catch, I was wondering if Dolphin was producing yet. We fished Southworth yesterday and got about a 6 pond blackmouth at 1200 and a 14 pound king around 7 in the evening. We went and jigged up about 20 dozen nice herring in between.

The reason most people fish the South side of Southworth is because that is the area that is open, Area 11. The north side of the ferry terminal is Area 10 and closed to the retention of Kings. Currently that part of area 10 is closed to salmon fishing. The line at the terminal may be fuzzy, but harper pier is miles in Area 10.

Glad to see some early Kings around though. Should be a good July and August.

The maps in the fishing guide pretty clearly point out the ferry terminal as being above or at the boundry of 10 and 11. In fact the exact description is a line east-west from the north tip of Vashon. On my boat charts, that is at or actually south of the terminal by a few yards. Close enough for government work. North of the terminal would be closed to all fishing, but I did see a few boats working that area when I was out last week.

NEN. The regs say area 10 open June 16. Catch and release in area north of medow point. I interpret this as area 10 south of medow point is open for fishing and retention of fish. Am I reading the regs wrong?

The only area open in MA10 for salmon fishing is C&R north of a line from Point Monroe to Meadow Point. All other areas of MA10 are closed for salmon fishing until July 1st.

Down loaded WDFW regs and you are correct. I was looking at the Seattle Times article written in early April that listed seasons in salt water. That article has an error and states are 10 is open. Catch and release north of Meadow point. WDFW map for area 11 shows cut off line just North of Southworth point. I will have to cut my northerly troll short until July 1. Thanks for the info.
