I'm going to Alaska, Bulchitna Lodge to be exact, which I believe is on the Kanai River at the end of July-beginning of August. Can anyone tell me a decent ro/reel/tackle to use for spinning, without breaking the bank? Also should I bring chest or hip waders. We're fishing Salmon.
Thanks for the help.

I think we need to know a bit more about what species you are targeting.

If you are on the Kenai in late July there should be good numbers of sockeye available. And I believe this is a pink year in Alaska. The kenai gets a ton of pinks. There are several big tackle shops in Soldotna. I would go there and let them outfit me for the target species.

If you will be guided will the lodge provide tackle? I doubt you will be targeting chinook from the bank especially after Aug. 1st, which is the usual closing date. Tell us more and we can tell you more.

I do agree with Bill Herzog who often says, "All hip waders are good for is washing the car."

True Value Hardware in Soldotna has tons of gear. If you are going to be fishing for Sockeye you will need a heavy enough salmon rod and spinning reel to turn them back once they run like crazy out into the current.

You should connect with your lodge on the net via email or give them a call. They will probably be the best place to get your questions answered.

Have a great trip!

Hip boots are fine for bank fishing the Kenai.

If you plan on fishing the Kenai after the first of August you might check as it is usually closed the 1st through the 4th. Maybe they changed it this year but I'm not sure.

Also, a bit late for Sockeye unless you are up pretty high on the Kenai.

Never heard of Bulchitna Lodge. Where are located?

Bulchitna Lodge is on Bulchitna Lake, which is on the west side of Lake Creek about 65 air miles north and west of Anchorage. If that is where you are going the king season will be closed, mostly silvers that time of year. Medium weight spinning or casting gear will do you fine.

Not only did the True Value Hardware in Soldotna have lots of gear they have the best prices anywhere. Yes anywhere! Everyone in our group of 6 made a major purchase of a rod, reel or waders even if they diidn't need it.

Bulchitna Lake Lodge is about 200 yards from crystal clear Lake Creek, a tributary of the mighty Yetna River. Lake Creek has all 5 species of Pacific Salmon, record size Rainbow Trout and Arctic Grayling. Bulchitna Lake itself offers Northern Pike and Kokanee fishing.
I guess by the website we're fishing Lake Creek.
Here's a web addy if anyone's interested:
