Does anyone know if I can buy a Canadian fishing license over in Port Renfrew near the marina. I'll be fishing out of Neah fri, sat, sun and would love to target Canadian halibut while I'm there.
Also what is the proceedure for contacting customs on the VHF on my way in to port.
Thanks for any help,
Dave

This is a bulletin board with lots of knowledge for that area. Jerry Garcia got some decent replies regarding crabbing in that area.

Don't you have to go to Victoria to clear customs?

Gutz I think your right. I checked into it a couple of year ago about going thru customs. Do a search on canadian customs you should find the info you need.

I don't think there is customs in Port Renfrew, and I also believe that you have to have something like a Can-Pass to call VHF and get permission to land.

Seastrike,

Get off of work as early as you can today. Drive up to Lynden to the Ace hardware store there. Buy your Canadian license. That's the easiest way I can think of to get it so you can fish Canadian Swiftsure.

I think that the hardware store only sells freshwater licenses. I crooss at the truck crossing at Blaine , go about 1/2 mile and the Campbell River Country Store is on your right at the intersection.

Thanks Jerry! Come to think of it, I have only bought freshwater licenses there. Sorry Seastrike, Jerry has gotcha covered.

After clearing Customs in Victoria, we have been known to stop in at Pedder Bay for licenses.

You can also get licenses at Sunny Shores in Sooke Harbor or whatever they call the part above the river. Watch the charts and marks if you head up there!

Otter Point might be worth dropping some lines down, if you hit a tide change ... Sheringham Point etc. I should be there now!

Here's what I've done quite a bit in the past. Go out of Neah Bay to swiftsure catch your US Salmon, go on in to Barkley Sound to Bamfield which is a customs clearance port. Very cool little town by the way if you've never been there. The fiord is main street and businesses have a dock instead of a driveway. Spend the night in Bamfield - visit the pub, do some crabbing, whatever. In the morning head out to the canadian side of swiftsure and get your 2 canadian halibut on the way back to Neah. If you stay 2 nights in Bamfield check out the salmon/halibut fishing on LePerous bank and the bottom fishing in the underwater spires in front of the broken group. If you're not sleeping on your boat then Woods End Landing is a great place to stay. Reasonable cabins that will comfortably sleep your whole crew, moorage, hot showers, full kitchen, gas grills, great host. Makes a very fun and productive trip.

OceanSun. Sounds like a good plan but the word is Bamfield is no longer a port for clearing customs. I hear they are making you run up to Uclulet. Has anyone cleared customs in Bamfield this year?
