I've been using doubletail lead heads for ling cod at Neah Bay with some success.......but its all I know. I'm sure there are other lures that work just as well. What works for you? Thanks.

I've only used big herring, but I hear 8 inch plastic grubs work.

Attach a 7/0 trailer on at least 40# mono to the hook bend. Then peg a herring through the head and put the trailer under the dorsal fin.

I use the rootbeer metal flake color and with the herring. I suppose it resmbles a small rock cod with a herring. Ever seen fish fight over a bait? Competition and forage. the strikes are vicious!

If your not fishing too deep pull out the long rod with some sinking line and tie on a Clouser Minnow or epoxy minnow, twitch it just off bottom and hold on.

Best ling bait is a small sea bass hooked up backwards.

Have recently started using dart type jigs exclusively in 2 & 3 oz. up to 100ft deep. They work on everything.

I agree on the dart-type jigs - did really well at Neah Bay two weekends ago with those. An added bonus is that it's a salmon-catching lure as well. I've caught a few nice chinook off the edges of kelp beds while casting to black seabass.

Otherwise I like to use a leadhead with a worm/skirt and sweeten it with bait - bait comes/is eaten off you're still fishing.

White Darts

If you have the patience to wait, nothing beats a live kelp greenling laced with a pair of 10/0 hooks. When your rodtip is pulled into the water, start reeling, but be ready with the net as your quarry may only be chomping onto the bait by its head and may not be actually hooked. Rockfish work well as bait as well.

I use lead head jig with 8 inch white or motor oil plastic single tail jig with either 2, 3 or 4 ounce head depending on depth and 50 lb tuff line.

Those jig heads can get expensive, however, particularly in the larger sizes. I'll spend a couple evenings in April making pipe jigs--the oldtimer's mainstay. A basic recipe:

1. Cut 4--8 inch pieces of 1/2" copper tubing (I'll scrounge the REstore, &c).
2. A couple inches up from one end of the tube, pinch half the diameter together with a large pair of channel locks. Pinch gently in the middle, then apply more pressure as you work out to the edges--a triangular shape seems best. Do not pop a hole in the pipe!
3. Drill a board full of shallow 9/16" holes to hold a dozen or so of your tubes. The more, the better--then you won't have to stop and cool them...
4. Melt some scrap lead out in the yard on a windy day and pour into the jigs. Leave 3/4" headspace. Let cool as is or splash with water or pull with pliers and dunk in a bucket.
5. Hammer or pinch the headspace together. Drill a hole here to attach a snap swivel. Drill another hole close to the edge of the pinched section.
6. Work a split ring into the hole of the pinched section and attach a barbless treble hook. (So far, I've had to pinch barbs off all my hooks--where the heck can a guy buy barbless trebles?) The idea is to keep the bend of the hook 1/4" or more above the bottom of the jig--much less snaggy. I find a light wire hook desireable for spots where I know I lose a lot of gear: much of the time, I'll bend or break the hook, but get the jig back. Carry extra hooks.

The worst part of it all is working with the lead, but it hasn't (*twitch*) bothered me yet (*twitch* *twitch*).

Barrys bait has gami barbless treble hooks. I always pick some up when I visit canada, seems alot of the places there carry them. I have also seen them on occasion at outdoor emporium, if they don't have them ask and I am sure they could order some for ya (real nice folks)!
